Gray Balancer Conflicts

2003-03-03 by disch7634 <disch7634@yahoo.com>

Last weekend my computer started restarting itself randomly. I turned
off the auto restart in XP and was able to trace it down to the Gray
Balancer software conflicting with my Epson 785EXP printer. I use my
2200 for anything of importance, however I use the 785 for printing
family snaps and stuff like that. I like the Gray Balancer and have
had good luck getting good B&W from the 2200, so I would like both to
be able to coexist. Has anyone run into this and is there a solution
that anyone is aware of that would allow the use of both.

How did you decide that the Gray Balancer and the 785 were
conflicting? What resource were they conflicting over?

I have the Gray Balancer, a 2200, and an 870, and both
printers use my parallel port (via a switch) and I've
never had any problems. I run Win2K.

I stripped all of my peripherals and their software off and restored
XP to before they were added, everything worked fine. I then started
adding the peripherals back on until I found the combination of
computer, software and peripherals that caused the error. It was the
785 and the Gray Balancer software. My theory is that the gray
balancer is trying to control the 785 in the same way it controls the
2200. What I don't know is if it is a combination of the 785, Gray
Balancer and XP. I would have to try a different operating system to
find that out. The fact that you say that you run Win2k without
problems would make me think that XP has some hand in the problem as
well.

That's why I was wondering what resource it was competing over.
It may not be the printer itself, but something like the
parallel port -vs- the USB port. How are your printers
connected to the PC?

I was thinking about the parallel port thing after you brought it up.
I have both of my printers connected to the USB hub. Maybe if I would
hook one of them up through the parallel port it might solve the
problem. I'm going to try that tonight.
