Coatings - 2-solution water-borne polyurethane
2002-11-16 by Paul Roark
My reading indicates that there will soon be a new super coating that might be useable for print coatings. Today, the state of the art -- standard super-tough industrial -- coating is a 2-solution, aliphatic, solvent-based polyurethane. These coat everything from oil platforms/tanks, wrecking balls, and factory/gym floors to cars & boats. If dealing with a solvent-based coating was not such a hassle, they would be at the top of my list. With the EPA and others putting pressure to reduce or eliminate VOCs (pollutants), the R&D has gone into finding good water-borne substitutes. It appears they are essentially ready for prime time now with the latest catalysts. It looks like there will soon be 2-solution water-borne super coatings that are commercially available. However, I have not found one that is actually for sale yet. If anyone has any information on these, please let me know. Using measuring cups/scoops is a method people already use with the solvent-borne 2-solution systems for small jobs. I think the hassle factor might be small enough to be worth the strength and moisture resistance these would give our prints. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com
