Okay: Here goes:

Epson 1280 printer with MIS-VM ink set
Epson Heavy Weight Matte paper 13x19
photoshop 7 on a mac

Images are worked in greyscale and converted to rgb before applying curve
Curves: vmm8-mw.acv

Printer settings by dialog:
Color Management Source space: document: adobe rbg
print space: same as source

media type: photo quality inkjet paper
Ink: Color
Print Quality: Photo-1440dpi
Color Management: color controls
mode automatic
gamma 1.8
Brightness, etc all 0
high speed is on for my tests but I have tried both on and off with no change

photoshop color settings:
greyscale: 1.8 gamma
color space: adobe rgb

Doug Fisher told me that I may be having a problem because the curves
were meant for Epson Archival Matte. Does anyone have some curves for
heavy weight matte that I could use as a jumping off point?

The exact same file, without the curves, printed with epson color
inks, has a full rich black. It color shifts in other areas-- one of
the reason I am trying to figure out the mis inks.

Thanks for any help!

Matt

Matt, the curves were written for Epson Archival Matte. All the rest of
your settings seem ok, except I use the heavyweight matte media setting.
If you use the BACKLIGHT setting, you will get noticeably deeper
blacks, but you may get posterization.

I don't get any posterization using these settings (except the backlight
setting on very smooth gradient type images).

Try the Archival Matte paper (it's whiter and thicker as a bonus). Now
relabeled by epson as Epson Enhanced Matte paper.

I never use the medium warm curve, I always use the nc neutral curve.
Try it and see if you still get posterization. I tried all curves, and
seems to me as the warm curves didn't deliver a deep black

ALSO: Try Media Street's Enhanced Generations Black ink instead of the
VM black ink. It is noticeably deeper black than the VM. This should
really help you get better blacks. Inks are totally compatible.

You could also try to set your contrast in epson sliders to +10. This
will also give you a slightly deeper black.

I would think that you'd want hi speed turned off for maximum quality.

Matt,

I use EAM/EEM on a 1280 with these inks. I also started out with Paul's
medium warm curve. Please see my message 18047 to get the details on what I
did to enhance blacks and eliminate (or greatly reduce) posterization
problems. It made a huge difference for me.

As Jerry mentioned in his email, I've heard lots of great things about the
Media Street's Enhanced Generations Black ink versus the VM black ink. I
intend to buy it soon. I probably should try the neutral curve, as well.
Just haven't done it yet.

Good luck!

Bob
