Okay: Here goes:

Epson 1280 printer with MIS-VM ink set
Epson Heavy Weight Matte paper 13x19
photoshop 7 on a mac

Images are worked in greyscale and converted to rgb before applying curve
Curves:  vmm8-mw.acv

Printer settings by dialog:
Color Management Source space: document: adobe rbg
print space: same as source

media type: photo quality inkjet paper
Ink: Color
Print Quality: Photo-1440dpi
Color Management: color controls
mode automatic
gamma 1.8
Brightness, etc all 0
high speed is on for my tests but I have tried both on and off with no change

photoshop color settings:
greyscale: 1.8 gamma
color space: adobe rgb

Doug Fisher told me that I may be having a problem because the curves 
were meant for Epson Archival Matte. Does anyone have some curves for 
heavy weight matte that I could use as a jumping off point?

The exact same file, without the curves, printed with epson color 
inks, has a full rich black. It color shifts in other areas-- one of 
the reason I am trying to figure out the mis inks.
