Epson 1430 Issues

Epson 1430 Issues

2018-10-19 by homershannon@...

My Epson 1430 is on the fritz. This is my color machine - I use a 1400 for B+W, but I'm hoping my issue is something that is seen with black and white printers using the 1430.

In the process of clearing some banding issues today (normal stuff), I wound up with the paper light and the ink light alarms on and flashing in synchrony. I searched the web for this condition and the closest I could find was these two lights alternating, which is an error code for a software upgrade failure. I did not do any software updating today.

I tried the "leave it un-powered for a while" trick and that did not help. I've also noted that on a restart, the machine goes through its normal start up cycle and then ends up with the ink light on. Usually, this means that one of the non-epson cartridges is not reading properly. The fix for this is to press the ink button, wait till the printer head parks and then re-install whichever cartridge has an alarm light on. Normally, after this cycle the printer runs a cleaning cycle and returns to normal operation.

Today, however, after start up, I get the ink error but after the above described correction, the machine goes to the flashing paper and ink lights and locks up.

Any ideas as to what is happening and what the fix is?

Sounds to me that maybe it thinks that the ink pads are full. Check out this link… https://epson.com/Support/wa00819

Hope this helps!!!

Hi,

If the lights are flashing it is the waste ink pads full warning lights

Epson say:

“The paper/cancel and ink lights are flashing alternately The printer's ink pads are nearing or at the end of their service life. Contact Epson to replace the ink pads. If the ink pads are nearing the end of their service life, printing can be resumed by pressing the paper/cancel button”

If the lights are solid it is a firmware upgrade failure.

Probably the best solution is get the software to reset the printer’s counters and to install an external tank for the waste ink. Search the web for the reset software. Probably not cost effective to have the ink pads replaced.

Some people simply reset the counters without changing the pads or fitting an external tank, you will probably get away with it once but there is always a risk of spillage.

Good Luck

Thank you for your responses.

I'm a little confused by the fact that Epson says, "If the lights are flashing ALTERNATELY". My lights are flashing in synchony - on and off together.

I know how to do the waste tank reset. I'll give it a try. I've done this procedure several times on the 1400 and even changed the pads once. Changing the pads is not terribly difficult, I'd rate it as a minor PITA, but upon opening the machine and getting the pads out, I found that they were barely full of ink and quite dry. I think it's safe to leave them in there and just do the reset forever. Not to mention that the pads themselves were fairly expensive.

I read the post with the link for the maintenance reset utility, thank you. When I powered on the printer, it started right up and got ready to print without the two lights flashing. I decided to see if it would print before I ran the reset utility. As soon as I tried to run a nozzle check, the lights started flashing again and now they do so every time I turn on the machine. I get the error posted in this image https://1drv.ms/u/s!AiR9KzpBmPls1jQ8j9zEuHyL89hY . It is not a maintenance error. It is a paper jam error.

I tried running the maintenance utility, but it did not complete and I got the error message, "Maintenance message cannot be removed or no applicable printer found."

Now what? What are people recommending for good color printers these days? I've about had it with this 1430; it's been nothing but a headache since new. The 1400 runs fine and I still like it for B+W, but the 1430...

Any recommendations for a color pigment printer? If so, I need two criteria: I want to be able to load my own cartridges and I don't print that often. If the machine needs to be run frequently to keep the heads clean, it's not the machine for me.

Re: Epson 1430 Issues

I've been running 2 Canon Pro-10s for the last couple of years. Used OEM carts for the first year, and saved the empties. Beginning in year 2 I switched to Precision Colors pigment inks to put back onto the empty OEM carts, and cut my ink cost by ~90% (I print mostly B&W using the black and gray inks in the printer, but I assume I still lay down as many square inches of ink as if I printed color). I have gone as long as 6 months without printing anything on either printer, and except for an extended startup period where the printer shook the ink carriage back and forth, presumably to redistribute any pigments that had settled during the down time, everything worked normally. I have never had a hint of a nozzle clog after 2,000+ prints through the printers over the years, and have never run a maintenance cycle manually.

Tom:

That thread perfectly describes my problem and the author stressed that the lights are flashing together, not alternately, which matches no Epson error code.

Unfortunately, the problem does not get solved in the thread, so it does not solve the mystery.

Hi Homer..I'm coming into this thread late..RU saying you cannot do an ink re-set on your 1430?

I think that they imply that there's a paper jam. Somewhere in there may be a scrap of paper or something like that so I guess you have to do is take a really good look inside and see what you can see. If there is no actual piece of paper perhaps the sensor has failed.

Re: Epson 1430 Issues

I got back on to this problem today and I think I've made some progress.

After trying a few different things with no improvement, I decided to put a set of Epson ink cartridges back into the printer. I was missing the light cyan cartridge and I think the other five were empty. However, the printer starts up and goes into a normal ink missing condition; the ink light is on steadily and the six lights in the ink carrier are on.

I put the six MIS refillable cartridges in without powering the machine off. After reloading, the printer ran a head cleaning then went back to the paper and ink lights flashing together.

I think what has happened is that my machine is suddenly unhappy with the third party cartridges I have been using. I have not initiated a software update, so I doubt that is the issue, but I'm curious about the software versions that will work with third part cartridges and the ones the lock you out of using them.

From the printer drive panel I'm seeing that the machine is at Version 6.92,unless this is the driver version. I looked at MIS' page and they note differences between the 6.3 cartridge chips and earlier chips. I believe I have the 6.3 chips, at least I know I cannot mix this cartridges with my 1400 that uses the older cartridges.

Can anyone explain what software versions the 1430 should be on to allow third party cartridges?

I cannot answer your specific question, but I can share that my 1430 is much more sensitive to 3rd party ink carts than any of my 1400s. Various carts will show errors and I used to have to swap them in and out to get the printer to work. Finally got tired of that. To the point that I am using genuine Epson ink carts in it. I get them on eBay to avoid having to pay the retail cost. I got one set for just $9, but that isn't the norm.

FWIW my printer driver is 6.91 and the refillable carts are version 6.0 and I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. My printer works just fine with third-party carts.

My 1430 had not been used in a while. I just connected it to my Windows Surface Studio (Windows CC; shows as Windows 10). After installing a new driver, the printer seems to be working fine. The Epson driver is version 6.92; the chips are MIS v. 6.3. I have my "Glossy Carbon Variable Tone" inkset installed in it. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Glossy-Carbon-Variable-Tone.pdf

Thank you for your responses. I think I can rule out the firmware revision possibility.

I tried turning off the machine and letting it sit unplugged for a few hours. Then I started it with no cartridges in it, which is supposed to force it to reset all of its level indications. Before putting in the MIS cartridges, I refilled them. (They were nearly all empty and I had yet to print a single page!) I hit the ink button and the printer parked the head as it should. I loaded the six, full MIS cartridges. The printer went through its normal post cartridge change cycle and then went into the locked-up condition with both the ink and paper jam lights flashing together.

The problem persists.

Although I'm rusty on the specifics, there is or was an "end of life" light flashing signal on at least some Epson printers. I had this happen and found a reset program on the web. It worked. That said, the bottom of the printers, which act as waste tanks in these desktop units, can hold only so much ink. I think soon after I did this a second time and tried to move the printer ink ran out of the printer seams and made a mess when I tried to move it.

My problem is looking like a firmware issue in the printer - it no longer accepts third party cartridges. Not sure how this could have happened, I did not do an intentional firmware update, but I'd like to find out what is going on.

Can anyone tell me what the last known "good" firmware revision is, i.e. what firmware is known to work with third party cartridges?

What is the procedure to find the current firmware version in the printer? (Not the driver, that is 6.92.)

Is the current Epson Software Updater v4.4.9 "safe" to use?

Is the Epson Recovery Mode Firmware vAO25G2 "safe" to use?

Hello Homer.. Inkjet Mall ( John Cone) has a newly designed (2016 or 2017) set of carts specific for your 1430.. I would give them a call and explain your "plight"..If you haven't already, I suggest you get in touch with them! You can re-set the chips so you can still utilize the Epson ink-level software. Cost is less than $40 for the set!

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Epson 1430 Issues

2018-10-27 by homershannon@...

I have reached out to Cone and they have been supportive but not said that their new carts would fix the issue for sure.

I spent some time today searching the web for answers to this problem. I installed a copy of the WIC Reset Utility, which is helpful. I was able to confirm that my firmware version is AO18C5, which dates back to 2012, so I do not have one of the dreaded no non-OEM cart versions. And, I'm at 70% on my waste utility - that's not the problem either.

Following the initial readings with WIC, I reloaded my printer with my MIS cartridges. Low and behold, it booted up OK and I was able to run a nozzle check and a color check pattern using the WIC utility - looking promising.

Then I looked over and saw that the two alarm lights were on and flashing again. Using WIC I was able to interrogate the machine and it is in a fatal error condition. The photo at https://1drv.ms/u/s!AiR9KzpBmPls1jf2y-zbZu2dafde shows the full status. Looks like issues with my head thermometers, which may explain why the printer works for a little bit, then over heats and goes into an error mode.

So now the question is, is this something that can be reasonably addressed or is this printer toast? If it is toast, what is the status of the latest Epson 1430s, can they support 3rd party cartridges or not?

I see that there is a very good deal available on the Canon Pixma Pro-100 right now at B&H, but I also noticed that Cone does not have any Canon inks. Any recommendations for good quality Canon ink? There is no way I'm going to use 10cc OEM carts. You use more to clean the heads than you do to print pictures and it gets just way to expensive. Also, the Pixma Pro-100 has a three-tone black and white capability. Is that something work exploring?

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Epson 1430 Issues - Resolved?

2018-10-29 by homershannon@...

My 1430 is not working yet but I think I know what the issue is. In the process of figuring this out I also learned something new and useful.

I found some obscure posts that described the dual, in-synch, light flashing condition. I also ran across the WicReset web page and downloaded their free utility, https://www.wic.support/download/.The obscure posts seemed to indicate that this condition is caused by dirty contacts on the wires connecting to the printer's print head. Using the WicRest utility, I was able to confirm that the error I have is a "Fatal error" 0x42, which is consistent with the head wire issues. I also have to confess that during my efforts to clear the head on this printer, I got pretty enthusiastic with my use of Piezo Flush and probably did corrupt something. And, the errors started about two cleanings after using the Piezo Flush. Mea culpa.

The cure for this will be to take the head apart and clean up all the connections. I've not started that and in the mean time, I have put my color cartridges in the 1400 and will use that machine until the 1430 is resolved.

Now for the useful part. When I put the color cartridges in the 1400, I was still having banding issues. I did a few cleanings and printed some purge pages to no avail. I also refilled the cartridges again. Head cleanings were not solving the problem.

In the WicReset utility, under cleaning, there are two options; head cleaning and ink charge. Since head cleaning had not worked, I tried the ink charge - there are two options, normal and strong, I used the normal charge. The impact of this was immediate and complete. The next nozzle check was perfect and a test print using the color check pattern, another useful tool in the software, was perfect. I was able to complete the small print job I have been trying to print for over a week. The Epson 1430 driver maintenance tool does not include an ink charge, but this function clearly assists in solving banding issues.

I highly recommend the WicReset utility. It's free and will give you information and tools that the Epson driver does not provide. It might even make printing fun again.

Did you buy the reset keys for WicReset?

I found some obscure posts that described the dual, in-synch, light flashing condition. I also ran across the WicReset web page and downloaded their free utility,https://www.wic.support/download/.The obscure posts seemed to indicate that this condition is caused by dirty contacts on the wires connecting to the printer's print head.
