Epson's SC Printers: P400 and P600

Epson's SC Printers: P400 and P600

2018-06-19 by roscoetuff@...

Anyone have experience with either of these - the P400 and P600 printers? Looking at a new one printer and these pop up as affordable and usable for 3rd party inks. Looking for feedback on paper handling and general usage experience. Thanks!

I’m using the SC P800 A2+ with Marruts refillable carts, I believe the 600 is similar. Well pleased with it after nearly 2 years use,
the larger capacity carts make the printer affordable for heavy usage compared to my old Epson with 14ml of ink per cart.

Brian: I have a P800, too. Sadly, not a refillable machine in the USA. You're one lucky guy! The P400 and P600 can be refilled without having to replace PC boards (one solution for the P800 here). The P600 seems a good compromise. Will miss bigger printing, but that's life I guess.

We are working on validating a firmware solution for P800. This will void warranty but possibly gotten around by NVRAM backup and replace . . .

Research is ongoing . . .

P400 and P600 currently work fine although Epson keeps getting more and more aggressive on their firmware upgrade prompts. Make sure do only download the driver (not combo) when running a new printer from Epson.

Best,
Walker

re SC 800 I do exhibition printing for local history archives, Art groups and Camera club, so the A2+ was initially a luxury buy but the savings on initial cost come from several advantages.16 and 17 inch roll papers, Larger ink cart volumes, the ability to do archival graphic image printing on a variety of traditional watercolour papers, ie Ordinary cartridge, Bockingford, Whatman, Archers as well as the excellent Hahnemuhle inkjet papers. Epson Archival matte and Marrut’s own brand Baryta and Archival matte.Having been stung by Epson’s freezing when the sponges fill up and a £200 reset charge, the user replaceable overflow cartridge is cheaper and a plus point too! I took the printer offline not upgrading the software after the guarantee was over and Marruts software and built in profiles are easy and accurate. Brian

The North American P800s will only allow one install of refillable carts. When they are reinserted after a refill they will not be recognized.

And update to this as this info was last year.

That 1 time thing was due to there only being 1 set of 1-time chips available for US models. Now there are several (upwards of 30 different sets of 1-time chips) + a decoder board with all of these chips present inside of it. We are investigating the 1time chips as well as firmware solution.

Best,
Walker

Just to close the loop on this forum, I sprang for the P600 and PiezoPro inks. If the rain continues, we may be seeing use a lot quicker than expected in the normal summer's photo shooting.
