Epson 1430 Refillable Cartridges

Epson 1430 Refillable Cartridges

2018-04-07 by homershannon@...

I have heard rumors that the current Epson 1430 have issues with 3rd party cartridges. Can anyone confirm that the latest 1430 can still use 3rd party cartridges and which cartridges will work with this printer?

My recollection is that Epson blocked the use of third party carts for US machines some years back. It was implemented via a firmware update. That is why folks have been advised to never let updates happen unless you know what you are getting.

To the best of my knowledge, non-US machines were not affected.

I'm using empty, refillable carts in my 1430 that came from either MIS or STS Inks.

I have two 1430’s and they both accept refillable carts. I also understand that an update some years ago blocks this so don’t under any circumstances allow such updates!!!!

I've heard that caution about updates too... but I'm trying to remember _which_ updates. Was it updates in Windows 10? Windows 7? updates in printer drivers? and how do you prevent the updates? Some of them are automatic.

BTW, I'm using carts from MIS and from InkjetMall in my 1430 - they work fine.

My understanding is that it's the printer firmware that you should be wary of updating, not the driver on your computer. Many years ago now there was a firmware update for a 14x0 printer that resulted in a third party lockout. Normally you'd have to go looking for one of these and install it yourself, but my recollection was that there was a package of Mac updates that had an Epson update slipped in there, and users were asked a seemingly innocuous question, like "do you want your printer software kept up-to-date automatically?", with no hint of what was entailed, until whammo! I've not seen a report of a driver update causing any lockouts. That said, I don't know how the recent HP lockout (since reversed) was implemented.

Brian,

You're right - it's the firmware, not the driver. It's been so long since I thought about this issue that I forgot.

Seems I also heard that it was when you purposefully initiated a downloaded update, that's when the firmware was updated - but the update that occurred automatically you were safe. Somehow that seems counter intuitive and doesn't seem right, so maybe my memory is lapsed on that issue as well.

I'm afraid I'm only adding to the confusion!

According to an IJM newsletter today, Epson are at it again. Recent firmware updates to a range of their printers have locked out third party carts, and even decoder boards. From what I read, it remains the case that updating just the driver shouldn't cause any problems. The challenge is in knowing that that's all the file you downloaded is going to do, as there are "combo" packages that do both the driver and the firmware, plus sundry other traps for the unwary as well. See the IJM newsletter for details.

Brian,

Can you point me to where on IJM I can view that newsletter? I check IJM every day but the part I check must be somewhere other than the newsletter. Here's where I check:

BTW, I'm still using my 1400... finally got it the point where I'm getting good nozzle checks each time I try. I also have a 1430 in mothballs, for the day when my 1400 goes under. The 1430 is stored with Piezoflush filled carts. I really like that 1400...

Thank you,

Paul

Very helpful, Brian, thank you. I think it looks like I'm safe for a while... the 1400 and 1430 being older are not the targets for these firmware upgrades. Still, I'll be careful if I ever need to download a driver.

Best regards,

Paul W.

My 1430 software just prompted me to do an update the other day.

I'd be wary of anything offered to me. You need to be absolutely certain of what is being offered. Were I to update the driver, I'd only do so by downloading the file myself, so that I could be reasonably certain of what I was getting. But I can't imagine the circumstances in which I'd want to update the driver so badly that I'd be prepared to take the risk, if I was running non-OEM inks.
