Suggestions for displaying matted prints

2014-02-08 by <johnp@...>

I'm looking for ideas for how to display some matted but not framed prints. All are 16*20", a mix of portrait and landscape. I want the flexibility to swap in/out prints from my accumulations.

I'm considering mounting a rail on a wall for prints sit on, but I'm looking for ideas on how to deal with the differing heights created by the portrait/landscape mix. How can I neatly tack the top of the prints to the wall?

Has anyone done anything clever to do something like this?

Thanks!

three options come to mind.. One is to use what referred to as a clip frame.. This allows a piece of glass or acrylic to be over the image to protect it and included in this assembly is a rear mount.. These ar eeasily dissambled and replacing the image with another is a no brainer..

Option two is to just rig up something on the back of your image that you can hang it from and use the new removable wall mounts (no holes) available at most hardware stores and online..

Option three (which I do here) is to use a wall mounted rail and from that use braided wire or a hanging rod to hang from ...this way you can arrange the images and even over lap them at different heights.. I have my entire studio set up this way.. I liked it so much that it is now added to most of the house so it's really easy to make changes..

google "salon hanging".

Of course if all these are already printed that may not be a good option, but something to think about going forward.

This is the way I hang work.

Jimbo

Do you a photo of your third hanging option. I have been thinking of doing similar in my studio.

Hi Paul,
I don't have an image that shows it so you can get it.. The system I'm using in the studio I got from United Manufacturing ...It consistes of wood mouldings and sqare rods that are about 3/16 square ...Mine are silver in color to blend in with the walls better but they also have a gold color also I think. You can place as many small slidable metal hanger on a rod as you want.. The plus to this system is it will support a lot of weight ...so large pieces that are quite heavy are no issue ..

What's in the house is more subtle.. It has an extrusion that mounts to the wall and this sytem use special brackets and sliders that work on cable that about the size of #4 or so picture hanging wire.. This set up is quite strong also but can't deal with the weight the other does ...You can see better what this looks liek here... http://gallerysystem.com/ This set up is less obtrusive looking as the wire is smaller.. Both work great but system from United is quite a bite less expensive.. You can get hanging rods 12' long or shorter..

For those that do art shows their is a system that works with display panels from Armstrong and ProPanels..

RE: Suggestions for displaying matted prints

Paul:

I've had good luck with the metallic frames from pictureframes.com with their acrylic glass or just the frames. These run about $35 each for 16 x 20. Your requested size would be larger and even more expensive, but this is a one-time cost and you can use them over and over as you change your images. I use mattes from goldenstateart.com. Gpldenstate has cut or blank mattes. Cut mattes are handy, blanks are more versatile. They offer free shipping on, which can be expensive, on a number of common items, if purchased in quantity lots.

You can hang the frames from pictureframes.com a number of ways. They give you connectors and a wire to hang them in a traditional manner. I almost never use this. In my living room I use velcro command strips. In my office/lightroom, where I display only black and white, I use a rail with that supports the wire brackets, slightly bent - without the wire, and at my work I use push pins. With the acrylic glass, these frames are quite light and the metal frame has a channel that fits a push pin well. I've come to think that this is the best way to hang them, though at my house I have skim-coat plaster walls and they don't take push pins well.

OK - I'm the original poster - here's what I did...

I ended up making a simple wooden "shelf" that I stained black. It's made
from a one*two piece of (scrap) wood that has a smaller piece nailed to the front
to make a lip to hold pictures in. I'll be using simple straight pins (ie sewing)
to hold in my 16*20 matts. If they are portrait, a pin will be at one height,
landscape, a different height. The pins are small, non-obvious, when I
change a place from portrait<->landscape, I can take out the pin and simply
move it up or down to a pre-existing (tiny) hole. I should mention the wall
is sheet-rock, so I can stick a pin into it (this wouldn't work so well on
a concrete wall).

This was simple to make, it looks clean, and it has the flexibility I want.

I also used up some scrap wood from my stash in the garage. A win-win
result.

I hope this sparks ideas for other looking into this type of problem!

For framed prints, I use a picture rail molding with picture rail hooks all painted the wall color. Prints are hung with a braided nylon cord (origin unknown) and developed a unique hook system that allows for relatively easy raising and lowering of prints. Refer to the Dropbox linked snapshots for the following: The hook system uses a short length of narrow tubing about 1/2' long by 1/8" in diameter. The cord is passed down through the tube and then through one end of a universal connecting link (one end opened to become the hook); once through the link the cord is passed up through the tube and then down the outside and passed through the corded "U" that the link is held by. I hope the photos clear this up. Cost? Too low to mention.

The hot link I included with the above message doesn't stay hot or readable in the downloaded Daily Digest. To see the system I mentioned, you can click the button to read the message on the web/forum where the link works.
