Digital BW, The Print

Folks,

I'm a new owner of an Epson 3800 that i was lucky (i think) to obtain  
off of craigslist for $90.

I'm currently using an R260 and R280 and R200 and some 2200 's

I think i'm going to set it up with the K3 ink at first, so i need to  
determine what refillable cartridges to buy and i need to decide whose  
ink to go with.

There seems to be some differences in cartridges with regard to chips,  
etc. I see some of the cartridge sets require you to have full factory  
carts before you make the swap.

I think i want good cartridges that come with auto reset chips .... i  
see some of them require that you use 2 chips from the epson set,  
etc .... can someone please explain this.

Also, if anyone has a junk 3800, i'm missing the big front output door  
(which doesn't matter). I have the delivery trays and i need the rear  
sheet guide for the manual feed slot.

Also, do i need the epson RIP? i'll be running it from various older  
OS X macs.

There are two sets of cartridges available. Some sellers claim theirs are
better than the identical looking ones sold by someone else.
They look identical because they are identical. One sellers cartridges are
NOT better than another's. Same cartridges, same factory.

Buy the short ones that allow you to close the lid. They have the resetter
chips built in. The long ones are defective and lose air pressure when they
are half full. Not worth the hassle (believe me, that was the understatement
of the decade). Both types require chips from OEM cartridges.

If you absolutely insist on buying the long ones, I will happily sell you
the set I own, at a very good price.

You can download the Epson software from the Epson web site. No charge.
You'll want the Epson software, and any firmware updates, regardless of how
you end up printing, or with who's inks. As for color inks, if permanence is
important to you, stick with Epson's. If you just want good output and don't
care about permanence so much, aftermarket inks are much cheaper.

One last thing. I found it necessary to push some of the refillable
cartridges upward in their slots just a bit by using some folded paper,
gently inserted under the back end of the cartridge. Before I did that, I
had trouble getting the printer to recognize them consistently. Don't forget
to bleed the cartridges before trying to use them. (There's a video on
