Epson Proofing Paper White Semimatte Replacement

Epson Proofing Paper White Semimatte Replacement

2013-05-06 by Lew Schwartz

I love this stuff: inexpensive, etc .... I make enlarged prints of just
about anything I need to see close up & inspect for imperfections. When
everything is the way I want, I make my final prints on archival paper. I
know it's not meant for permanent printing: yellows quickly, brittle, etc...

It's creating a problem, however. When family and friends see these proofs,
they may ask for 'quicky' prints in bulk. I don't want to give them the
Proofing Paper, but they aren't asking for exhibition quality prints
either. What can I use to keep everyone happy inexpensively?

Where did you observe/read that it yellows? I had window tests here for
months without a color shift. There is no OBA content in it either. It
has a very high white reflection and has a very wide gamut. The reason
why Epson quotes its wide gamut in the ads for x900 wide formats. Very
good reds and despite the OBA absence the blues are still good.

The structural strength was not less either after the windows test if
some simple tearing tests are telling enough. If you add a protective
spray it could last a very long time. The only thing against it is that
there is no Aardenburg or Wilhelm test of that paper and in my case with
HP Z printers there is some gloss difference + bronzing.

I'd love to be wrong about this. I'll check out what I've been reading.
What sort of spray are you referring to?

I guess I'm extrapolating from the product description ("Excellent short
term stability for exacting proofing standard") to mean poor long term
stability. Do you believe this to be incorrect?

That line is deceptive. For proofing in the graphic arts users want a print where the colors become stable fast and stay in that condition so all parties involved can sign off the proof and production can start. It says nothing negative about long term stability. You are not the first that interpreted that line incorrectly.
