Which inkjet papers work best for drymounting prints? I have an Epson R3000 and I plan to use a commercial framer. One paper I'm interested in is Ilford Gold Fibre Silk.

Thank you,

I have not had any problems with any of the glossy papers and dry mounting.
 I just keep the temperature low -- 180 f.

Short answer: if your goal is "art", dry mounting is absolutely out of the
question, without exception.

If your goal is commercial, dry mounting, glue, staples, chewing gum,
anything that works, they are all in the same "quality" class.

You can dry mount just about any paper, but the type of dry mount tissue,
and the temperature, vary according to paper type.

Some image surfaces may be adversely affected by the heat.

Re: Papers for Drymounting

2012-11-17 by Seth Rossman

Since you didn't say which type of dry mounting, I'll go ahead and give
my thoughts on both.

If you're talking about adhesive (transfer or pre-stuck) the 3M is
generally preferred. BUT, any "pre-applied" adhesive is deadly. I
worked for a major historical society in the past and have dealt with
photo conservators. "Acid-free" is not the only issue.

From a heat mount standpoint I'd ask what their mounting temperature
is. Keep in mind that inkjet papers should never be sent through a
laser printer because the coating could melt; likewise some pigments.
Lasers (generally) run at 400-deg F; some dry mount presses get close to
that. Considering that paper only passes through the fuser at about .10
of a second, leaving a print in a hot press for significantly longer
could be as bad.

Hinging is the accepted way to mount art. Anything from linen tape to
mulberry paper/rice paste. A lot of places (Michael's, Hobby Lobby,
etc.) now use what they call photo mounting tape which is a white
masking tape. They just tape the art to the mat.
Actually, hinging will keep the art flat since it can move with changing
temperatures and environmentals.

Of course, you didn't use the terms archival or longevity, so I may have
gone overboard.

Seth

Okay, I realize I didn't say a whole lot in my OP. It's for hanging pictures around the house -- kids, family, etc.

Longevity and archival issues are not a concern. As long as it looks relatively new and fresh for 3 to 5 years, I'm fine.

Basically, this is two-pronged question:

1) From an aesthetic standpoint, which types of paper finishes look good? I see matte papers being used a lot, but in most cases those were used in commercial installations where resistance to fingerprints was essential.

2) What are the basics about the dry mount process? I hear lots about cold vs. hot. I want the print to look good, but if the print is destroyed/damaged in the process, it's no loss -- I can make another.

Thank you again,
Robert

You can use dry mount adhesive that mounts at around 170F, and there's no
reason to go over 200F, let alone near 400F. I recently went to a show of
all Ansel Adams prints. They were all dry-mounted, of course. This issue,
whether to dry mount or not, has been gone through for quite awhile. Even
the conservators at the Smithsonian say that dry mounting, if done
properly, is a perfectly acceptable way to mount art. It's the best way to
keep a print flat.

Robert with your display requirements you can pretty much go anyway you want to go.. including simple photomount spray adhesive all the way to a heated platten vacuum rig or laminating your choice.. Dry mounting is quite convenient..I would suggest if you aquire a dry mount press with heat.. that way if you want to fool with different materials you can.. Would I dry mount an original ..nope.. but prints sure.. We have a seal 4468 vac seal rig and a seal 44 inch hot/cold laminator..

As far as what paper surfaces look good well that's going to be your call as it's personal choice Personally I'm not into a gloss finish but much enjoy teh fine art paper looks along with the lower luster photo type materials..

Re: [Digital BW] Papers for Drymounting

2012-11-18 by Seth Rossman

Okay, for "hanging around the house" and your worry about fingerprints
gives me the mental picture of mounted prints just hanging on the mat
board. No frames, glass/acrylic, front mat, etc.

The times we did do this was for "exhibits" that moved around. Not that
I didn't have to replace a few during the life of an exhibit. You can
probably expect a two to three year life if no direct sunlight burns on
them during the day.

Fingerprints?? Why are folks touching them? If that is an issue,
something as simple as a clear fixative spray would let you clean them
with a barely damp soft cloth. Fingerprints on the mat would need a
either a gray or flexible art eraser.

However, those were the silver days and E paper surface. All prints
were toned in some manner to stabilize the silver.

Your question about type:
I would ask your framer what they use. Make a small test and ask him to
mount it on something. (Make two and compare when you get one back!)

If it is adhesive, 3M makes a roll that requires a special silicone
covered press that does a nice job. Some ooze needs to be cleaned off,
but they should do that.

As Paul said, heat shouldn't burn the coating or pigment at 180 and below.

Trust me. I was with a Xerox service guy when he had to replace a fuser
in a multi-thousand $$$ Docucolor that had inkjet paper run through.
The user had seen me using King James Cast Coat (not an inkjet paper) in
a demo machine. He was warned the next fuser was on him!! The point is
that ~400-deg F will melt the surface.

OT- This is why I stay away from paper for my color laser marked "inkjet
and laser compatible." They are neither IMO.

Cresent Perfect Mount from Dick Blik is a acid free ph neutral (So they say) pre adhesive board. Very easy to use and very rugged. ti comes in all sorts of sizes and !/4 and !/8 thicknes ,also foam core. I use it for making puzzles and toys for my granddaughter, Hever had it buckle or discolor after 2 years.

Robert,
You might look at this 3M product for mounting:

http://www.dickblick.com/products/3m-scotch-positionable-mounting-adhesive/#description

I used to use it for making posters, before posters could be printed all one sheet. There is a reference to an applicator in the description, but the adhesive comes with a little plastic device, shown in the picture, that does the trick.

Then I'd just make sure that they know about and use an appropriate
adhesive. It has been long enough now that most places that do mounting
should know better, but there are specific adhesives made for inkjet prints.
Appropriate being one that doesn't cause yellowing of eth paper and image
because of pH issues.

Micheal's has some Elmer's Foam Board that is repositionable Self-Adhesive.
I've used it for just some around the house stuff.
