6X6 scanner choice..

6X6 scanner choice..

2012-08-30 by dmet2006

Hello to all recipients..
I'm looking for a way to scan 6X6 b&w negatives for printing via a Epson R2400.
Can you please suggest the "proper" device - scanner?
Can a flatbed scanner with this additional option do the job with acceptable result?

best regards
Dimitris

Resolution wise a good flatbed like the Epson V700 should deliver enough
data for an A3+ sheet size. Say a true optical resolution of 2000 PPI
delivered by the scanner is 4400 PPI on the 56x56 mm fil frame. 330x480
mm is the largest sheet size possible if I recall it correctly. For
printer driver input there is 746 PPI available in best case, 513 PPI
available in worst case. Ample enough, leaves some space for more
cropping too.

Dynamic range could be an issue depending on the density range of the
B&W negative. Multi exposure in third party drivers helps then, Vuescan,
Silverfast.

I can confirm it does. Rollei 6000 negs scanned on a V700@optical res 6900
x 6900 px and the optics are very good indeed. Results are far better than
I expected, and some of you may remember I used to run filmscanner tests
and reviews. 6x6 ISO100 negs are still capable of outclassing my 5d2 by a
fair margin c/o the V700. I used to sneer at flatbeds but not any more.

I can't print at larger than A3+ but I'm sure they'd print at >24" without
any sense of inadequacy. You could pay 8x as much for an Imacon for a gain
of about 5% in overall IQ. The Epson really is ridiculously good for the
price. I wouldn't use it for 35mm however, where 2000ppi is not enough.

I would suggest spending a little more and buy the Epson V750 for the
supplies software. Hold off on upgrading to SilverFast V8 until after you
have installed and updated the V6. V8 is not ready for prime time yet!

If it is for the wet mount holder you better get Doug Fisher's wet mount
holder. That, a Vuescan license and the V700 is what I have. I used to
make my own wet mount holders but the Betterscanning ones are in fact
perfect.

I have the Better Scanning holders as well. I found that 3,5mm to be the
ideal height. With B&W, the highest resolution I could obtain was 3,200
(single channel).

I also have the V750. There are some 6x6 scans in my gallery at http://jeffgoldner.zenfolio.com/movingwater - should be obvious which ones (they are square!).

I used the stock Epson holder for these. I don't recall if I used Silverfast to digitize or the Epson scanning software which works well and properly finds the frames. Most of my 6x6 scans were at 4800 (probably overkill).

For me, the advantages of the V750 over the V700 are the software plus the
reflective and positive IT-8 targets which, through Silverfast, provide very
good color management. In addition, I do own a Kodachrome target for
scanning old slides. I purchased the V750 to replace my old Microtech 120tf
that has a failed board (no parts available). The V750 provides almost
comparable resolution to the 120. For 35mm, I still have a Minolta 5400
which does provide an honest 5,400 dpi and I use it for all my 35mm work.
