Hi: I don't have the 1400, but many epson printers have a plastic "catch" which prevents movement of the heads on the carriage. If you can see one, push it down with a small screwdriver, or sometimes there is a wheel on the other end that will move it out of the way. It is recommended by many, to install the epson cartridges on a new machine first. You will know for sure that it works anyways.
