The ICCs made with Roy Harrington's "Create ICC-RGB" program will provide soft proofing with one caveat (as I understand it): the curves set that is embedded in the ICC must have at least one of its color curves that has no flat spots. Occasionally curves I make do not meet this criteria. I do think the 220 is an excellent way to get into digital B&W printing, and I think the workflows that use the ICCs made possible by Roy's program give a state of the art workflow.
