Hypo Clearing Agent is mainly sodium sulfite, whereas Hypo Eliminator is amonia, hydrogen peroxide and water. And yes I'm sure that he recommended Hypo Eliminator, followed by selenium toning, in the first edition of the book in question. Note: not only shouldn't one use Hypo Eliminator, but light selenium toning doesn't give near the protection that was once thought, at least it doesn't according the the Image Permanence Institute at RIT.
