On my gradients (4x6" @ 300dpi) I could see no difference without applying pretty strong tonal moves. >> Another point is if you do your conversion last, so that you will not be >> applying a tortuous tonal adjustment after conversion, dither, or not, will >> likely make no difference. > > On the contrary, the most severe tonal adjustment you will make, your sep > curves, must be done after conversion. That's an excellent point, which I hadn't considered. Interestingly though I just did a gradient and converted to AdobeRGB with and without dither, then applied a separation curve (selected somewhat arbitrarily, but trying to pick one that is middle of the road: Roark's 1160 NC curve) and I could see no difference. But I ain't got your eyes. > It was just an observation, if you like the results with dither I'm not > countering that. > As I said, I have no idea if this is a problem. Likewise. Just because a topic interests me (and I seem to enjoy the minutia) enough to make some tests and share the results doesn't mean I'm attached to any particular outcome. I'd much rather be wrong and learn something than be right and learn nothing. I'm really glad you raised the issue, I learned from it. Todd Todd
