One last thing about the dither. Tyler's test was of a single tone, which
got converted then tortured with a tonal adjustment. Doing the same thing on
a gradient I think you'll find you prefer the dithered conversion as it
makes for smooth transitions, while the non dithered one shows banding.


Of course if you stay in 16-bit mode it's moot.
