This bit of information may not apply directly to the issues raised here, but I'll throw it out there and perhaps some will find it useful.

I bought a set of empty carts for my 1400 from Inkjet Mall:

Jon Cone claims his carts contain chips that work in all incarnations of the 1400 and 1430, and are manually resettable with a resetter also available from him. Again, I realize this printer is not being discussed here but perhaps InkjetMall has other empty cartridge sets for the C88 printers that are manually resettable. I was never quite comfortable with the ARC types of carts.
