I don't know of public, high qualtiy tests of the various dye competitors,
aside from Epson's and HP's, both of which are at the high end of the dye
spectrum.  I think your own experiences are consistent with what I've
experienced and seen relative to what I'd call traditional or older dye
technology.  I think the burden is on sellers.

My views are rather well know in that respect.  How much one wants to
compromise is rather subjective and dependent on how long you want an image
to last.
