Inks settle in the cartridge pretty quickly. That's why Epson says they should be used for no more than 6 months after insertion in the printer. In practice you can measure Magenta settling (with a spectro) within 2 months. Yes it wastes ink with a cleaning cycle, but what's the good of ink with changing density ? To minimize the chance of getting air in the lines/ink I shake and then let them stand in the printer for 30 mins before I lower the levers. You have to shake regularly if you keep ink in the printers for more than couple months. If you don't then inks will settle and even when you do shake they will be a different density (assuming you've been printing along the way). Also remember it takes a few cleaning cycles / prints to push the shaken ink down the tubes to the head. When all said and done if you really care about consistent colour you need to shake your carts once a month.
