how to add more pads?

how to add more pads?

2004-04-19 by Timothy & Jessamyn

Can anyone give me ideas on how to add more pads to my dtxpress II?
From what I can tell, I can plug the kick cable into the '9/10' extra
input & plug an additional pad to the 'pad in' on the kick itself.
Then I could use the now vacant kick input on the module to plug in
yet another pad; giving me the capability to add a total of two more
pads to the set.

Is there a better way? Also, is there a way to add more than two
extra pads without buying a seperate module?

That's one way. More convenient (in my opinion) is to use an insert
cable or "splitter" to put two mono pads on 9/10.

Two options are open to you. You could buy a trigger-to-MIDI
converter, such as the Roland TMC-6 or (now discontinued) PM-16, both
of which you can get on eBay, the latter for silly money now. You
would then need to dabble in the arts of MIDI.

Or, you could take my route: cheat. I have taken to splitting cymbal
inputs to a stereo cymbal and another mono pad. For example, I have a
mono cymbal pad split into my stereo ride cymbal - I use the edge on
the stereo as a crash, and the other as a ride (same sound as the bow
on the stereo pad). The benefit is not another "input" in this case,
but cymbals mounted in natural positions for crash and ride. I also
have a fifth tom split into another. Again, crash on the rim of the
cymbal but the bow of the cymbal (and therefore the tom pad) as an 8"
tom. Many benefits, and one drawback: mis-hit the cymbal and your
well-placed crash is replaced by a tom strike!

You really should go back through the archives. As you can imagine,
these questions get asked a LOT.

Simularly, you can take two PCY65S stereo pads and connect them together
with a standard stereo Y-splitter cable and place one on the left side of
your kit and one on the right side, have two crash cymbals with bow and edge
voices (that will be the same for both pads) and still maintain choking on
both as well.

Wait...are you saying you can split the crash or ride input into two
stereo pads so you can connect two stereo pads into each and get the
bow/edge sounds and still choke? If you can, can you change the
sounds on those sharing a stereo input. This sounds like it can't be
done...splitting a stereo input into two stereo inputs and allow
multiple sounds.

P.S. You can always do what I am doing, putting a PCY65S in the
factory ride input and splitting 9/10 into the ride and adding a bell
pad. I will probably buy a second module or the converter soon. (Am
kinda hoping another company comes out with a converter so I don't
have to pay Roland prices.)

If you take a two PCY65S cymbal pads and take a Y-stereo cable (similar to
what you would use to split a stereo headphone jack out of an amplifier to
use with two stereo headphones, not the typical Y-insert cable that splits a
stereo to a mono-left/mono-right output) and plug it into input no. 7. The
voice you assign for the pad will be the same for both pads and the voice
you assign for the rim will be the same for both rims, but you now will have
two crash cymbals in your kit, even though they will have the same voices
for both. And choking will work on both cymbals. The down side is, of
course, that both cymbals will have the same voices, but you get a crash for
the left and a crash for the right side of you kit.

Zack,

No. The point that Stewart and OGD were making is that you can split
these inputs, but you'll only get the same sounds. The advantage is
that you have these sounds on either side of you when you need them.

That's what I thought. I want to assign two different voices, so I'll
go with my original plan.
