MIDI transmission causes noise?

MIDI transmission causes noise?

2001-01-14 by Dan Mowczan

I recently purchased a Roland UM-1 USB Midi interface so I could get some
communications working with my PC for storing drum kits. It's a cool little
interface, and fairly inexpensive ($49 at Edirol's site) if you want a USB
type.

Of course, the driver is crashing my Mac. But, that's another story.

I threw the driver on a PC and started working immediately. I pulled up a
MIDI file of some Piano and it played beautifully, except there was a
cackling coming from my amp, kind of a static or popping sound. At first I
thought 'Boy, these are some bad GM sounds', but after then downloading some
kits from DTXpressions to play with, I hit the 'Send' key on DTXchange and
during the entire send, the popping was occuring, this time at a much faster
speed, but only for the two seconds or so required to receive the kit. It
seems that any MIDI data received causes an audio glitch in the outputs.
The transmission worked properly, however.

Then, I noticed anytime MIDI was hooked up, there is a slight ticking from
my DTXpress brain in the neighborhood of 240-260bpm. Disconnecting the
Roland UM-1 from the MIDI cable, effectively powering it down, stops the
ticking. Shutting down the computer but leaving the cables connected also
stops the ticking. When the windows driver is running, the ticking occurs.

Finally, I did a bulk dump of data from the DTXpress brain. This I can't
get to work at all. The PC doesn't simply doesn't seem to see any data.
During this, I get no popping or static through the amp however.

In frustration, I swapped the MIDI cables in and out in case I did something
wrong, which didn't do a thing, but when they were swapped, I was getting a
significant ground hum from my Amp that I wasn't before.

Any ideas on what's causing this? I also can't seem to detect any of this
through my headphone jack, but based on the volume output on it, I can't say
for sure if it is there or not.

Dan,

I had the same problem. What i think is going on is that the DTXpress
internal memory management gets corrupted. The solution is to reset the
machine by using the sequence of button pushes detailed in the manual. You
will lose all custom patches unless you save them via sysex 1st. You can
load them back in after the reset. They will still work and the pops will
be gone.

Shoot, no solution. Even the 'pulse' during non-communication (which I
assume is some sort of watchdog to insure communication exists) pulse right
through and after a reset. I'm going to call Yamaha tommorrow and get their
thoughts on it.

Re: [DTXpress] MIDI transmission causes noise?

2001-01-15 by Dan Mowczan

Hey everyone, last post on this topic, I found something that is a solution,
albeit something I need to learn more about. And, wanted to send this to
the people who responded and wanted to know what I found (mainly wether or
not my unit was to be determined faulty).

When I run my Roland KC-500 through a two to three prong adapter, the
ticking disappears. I ran across something similar when I set up my home
theatre system. The Klipsch subwoofer actually came with a three-to-two
prong adapter, indicating it should be used if inexplicable noise appears,
and they recommended getting a ground isolator for my cable line if this
solved the problem. It was the solution there, and it is in fact seeming to
be the solution here. Of course, determining where the ground problem
exists is critical to the safety of my equipment.

Thanks for the friendly responses!

-Dan

Re: [DTXpress] MIDI transmission causes noise?

2001-01-15 by Rich

Hey Dan, that's rather bizarre. Let us know if the solution sticks. I have
the same issue as I said before, so I am definitely interested. I just
figured the OS was written poorly. For me the clicks only occur when midi
data is sent to the unit, not if its in "local on" mode. I guess it is
possible a midi ground could interact with audio. I am wondering why an OS
reset clears the problem for me but not you, and how it is possible for
software to create a grounding issue, but I'm glad you are getting a handle
on it. Rich

Re: MIDI transmission causes noise?

2001-01-15 by Ken Anthony

I've been sending tons of MIDI to the dtxpress without any
eroneous noise, but I have heard this noise on other systems and
, in most cases, it turned out to be caused from crosstalk in
the audio cables/mixer/ground loop/etc.

I would start from ground zero and attempt to eliminate
the noise source through process of elimination.
