Using DTXpress simply as a midi trigger

Using DTXpress simply as a midi trigger

2000-11-06 by mburke@dialogmedical.com

I have a software-based sequencer called gigasampler that has some
tremendous drum samples available. Has anyone set up DTXpress as a
simple midi trigger for a library of audio drum samples? Would it be
easiest in "Native" mode or GM? Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,

Use GM mode to lessen the configuration headache between the
DTxpress and the GM library. If you use the Native mode, you'll
have to map the softsynth's midi notes to match the dt.

I've tried to use the dtxpress to trigger other software
synths, the biggest problem was the latency of the software
under Windows 98 ( AMD k6-2 400 processor w/ 128 meg ram) so
you'd hit the pad, and after few millseconds you'd here the
soft synth kick in. I've had great success using it to
trigger other drum/keyboard brains ( Roland d-110, etc. )

Let me know if GIGA works without excessive delay.

The soft synths for Windows work ok if they are the
ONLY sound source and you're playing back some recorded MIDI
and NOT trying to synch with recorded audio, in which case
the lags are relatively unpredictable and will piss you off.

I have now successfully used the dtxpress as a trigger for
gigasampler, and it works fantastic! Virtually no latency (which I
think is what makes gigasampler popular) and excellent sounds. The
only problem I have now is that I only have one drumkit library for
the giga (from drag and drop drummer www.dddrummer.com). Most of the
sounds from their dry kit are excellent, but the ride cymbal sounds
like a really bad musical triangle. I guess I can just split up my
work into separate tracks in my sequencer and continue to use the
dtxpress ride cymbal sound, which is much better.

At any rate, the setup works very well (after I remapped my kick and
snare drums to midi standard note numbers 35 and 38, respectively).
