Triggers on cymbals

Triggers on cymbals

2003-08-07 by narrowgatedrummer

I havent tried this yet but, can I set the triggers for the cymals
to NOT go off while Im rolling around on the toms?
Its driving me nuts!

I do love this kit though...endless sounds and effects! Been sweatin
half the day with it! Put my Zil. Cymbals in place with it...cranked
up the Genz Benz and Jammed!
Thanks,
Billy

Billy,

Pull out the manual and read about rejection/specific rejection under
the trigger heading. These are the settings that deal directly with
crosstalk. The rejection number is a measure of how much protection
an individual trigger needs to withstand general vibrations caused by
hitting other triggers on the rack. Specific rejection helps a pad to
resist vibrations that originate on a another pad in particular. This
protection comes in the form of muting the pad for a nano second when
the module detects an offending event from another trigger at the
level reflected in the designated number. The higher a trigger's
rejection number, the more likely it is to remain silent when you
want it to make a noise. So the rejection numbers should be kept only
as high as necessary to get the job done. Gain and min. velocity come
into play as well. If a trigger is set to fire too hot and too
easily, crosstalk will always be a threat. All of these parameters
need to be mutually adjusted, and that will take some time to get
right.

The way I trouble shooted the triggering problems was to watch the module
lcd screen. When you strike a pad the level of the strike will be indicated
and any other pads that are also triggering will be noticable. You can go
into the trigger setup menu and set the "specific rejection" trigger setting
for a pad to tell it not to trigger if the pad next to it is struck. So, if
you strike tom1 and ride 1 also sounds then set the trigger for ride 1 to
"specifically reject" tom 1. If you strike tom 2 and crash 1 also sounds
then set the trigger for crash 1 to specifically reject tom 2. Another
thing to consider is that striking the edge of the drum pads as oppose to
the center of the pad will generate more vibration that will be transmitted
back through the frame.

The is what cause the problem between the snare and the hihat, based on the
factory settings. Since both pads are mounted on the same arm, their
rejection of each other or set high so that striking one doesn't trigger the
other. Thus, I you are a heavy hitter, moving the hi-hat pad to the
alternate mounting location may make sense. (On the same arm as the module,
and then eliminate the specific rejection between the two pads.)

If you ever get a bell pad and mount it on the same arm as a cymbal pad,
then like wise you will have to tell the bell pad trigger to reject the
cymbal pad and tell the cymbal pad to reject the bell pad.

Hope that helps.
