Public v Restricted Access

Public v Restricted Access

2003-08-04 by ozteevan

Hi Team

Well done on setting up the moderator.

Those of us that are also members of the Yahoo DTX group, which has
member only access, will have noticed that it too has been getting
spam.

I have not tested it but can you email a group without being a
registered member on the Yahoo boards or does it bounce?

I originally found this group based on a Google search that found a
posting that answered my question. If we restrict the access will that
stop Google indexing the content?

I wish there was some way of adding a counter to the group to count
the number of casual readers (see next post for Poll results). Vern -
any ideas how this could be engineered?

Roger

PS I would be happy to help the moderators if I can.

Actually I don't know much at all about moderating a Yahoo group, I've
never moderated one b4. I do know how this could be accomplished with
DTXpressions.com and PHPBB though.. :) I'll look through the options and
see what I can see.

Roger,

Walt, your owner, seems to be on an extended leave of absence, and a
lot of us miss him. I don't remember whether he appointed a moderator
or not. It seems not, because the spam is resting comfortably on your
site.

I don't think that you can email w/o being a member. Vern?

My guess is yes. They'd only be able to index the site. Vern?

Again, I'd guess that would have to be a Yahoo thing.

Appreciated. We're open to any and all suggestions. By the way,
thanks for trying to locate Thackson.

Hi Vern
Can you check out adding a counter to some HTML on the Home page?

Is it possible to post HTML format emails to the board? Hmm - if you
can then you could add a counter to that.

I am sure that Yahoo keep great stats for their own records but they
would never make them available - except to advertisers!

AFAIK, you can *read* a members only group, but you can't post.

AS above, I think reading w/o a membership is still ok so that shouldn't
restrict google/yahoo spiders. Also, I would imagine it woulld be pretty
weird for yahoo to block their own spiders. :)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
