Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

My son has a DTXPRESS 1 that has a staticy cymbal, I pretty sure the 
sensor is wearing out not a problem with cables or connections. I do 
not know if this is fixable but I am willing to order a replacement as 
he is pretty serious as a drummer. But as long as I am ordering a 
replacement is there an optimal "upgrade" cymbal that will work with 
the first generation DTXpress? If there is a simple sensor fix please 
let me know I'm not a drummer or musician but comfortable with 
electronics.

Look in the photo archive here under "Inside the Dtxpress" and you 
can see what the insides of one of the cymbal pads look like. You 
have piezo glued to the underside of the plastic housing. If it has 
gone bad and you are handy, you can replace it. 

If it is the connector that is just dirty, then use a little alcohol 
on a q-tip. If the PCB or the connector is cracked and you are versed 
in repairing PCB's, you maybe able to resolder and repair it. 
Replacing the PCB would cost as much as a new cymbal pad. 

The newer PCY130 (mono) and the PCY130S would work fine on the 
Dtxpress modules I/II/III. The PCY150S would work but you would only 
get two zones to work and not three. The PCY65/65S will also work 
with that module and is much less expensive.

You can get him a Pintech Zenbal, which is an upgrade to the DTXPress Cymbals, the cymbals are about $159 list, however, you can pick one up on Musicians friend for $111. I own 3 of these cymbals and they work very very well.  The cymbals are Zenbal ZB2's.  HTH.
