DTX2s voices question

DTX2s voices question

2004-08-12 by temp1111

Hello,
I rec'd my DTX2s a couple of weeks ago and have been doing a lot of experimentation, as I am implementing the brain to trigger my acoustic kit.
One area that I am a bit confused on, is the number of tom voices for a given voice family. For example I have decided that for starters I like the sound of the Maple toms in preset kit #2. The voices used are dryMaple10, 13, 14 and 16 which is fine to match up with the 4 e-toms that come with the DTX2s, but I have a 6, 8, 12, 15 and 18 in additional acoustic toms (above and beyond my 10, 13, 14 and 16)
So... my question is, is there somewhere I can download additional toms to match these sizes or are they hidden on the included CD (I reviewed the Data handbook but could not find anything to indicate that additional voices for the Maple kit were included there)
If there is nowhere to get these voices from, is my only option to adjust the tuning of the 4 existing toms? That doesn't seem like it will be adequate since the diameter and depth of the shell make as much of a difference as tuning. I'm not sure if I'm explaining my question/concern properly, but I guess my bottom line is, how do I best go about getting voices for my extra tom sizes.
Thank in advance!
Vic

Hi Vic,

Got it. If you had COSM, you'd be able to adjust for shell depths and
diameters. Just kidding. I don't know what's on the CD ROM that comes
with the kit. Yamaha has been known to skip a few sizes on their tom
samples in the past, so you may not be able to fill in the gaps. One
thing that you might try besides adjusting the tuning is varying
delay on the missing sizes to compensate, and you can experiment with
laying voices to create a missing drum--say, layering a 14 and a 16
to get a 15. Also, the difference between 12 and 13 wouldn't seem to
be so great that tuning and a little extra tweaking of parameters
might provide enough differentiation. I'd be tempted to say the same
thing about 16 and 18 (you might use a maple kick to approximate the
latter). I'll go way out on a limb and speculate that tuning to a 6
and 8 from the 10, keeping the results relatively dry, while the
larger sizes get progressively wetter, might not sound bad at all.

But you might want to ask Yamaha directly about the availability of
the full series somewhere. Join Yamaha's DTXperience forum, and pose
the question directly to Yamahammer. If he doesn't know, he'll find
someone who does.

COSM (Composite Object Sound Modeling) is the proprietary framework
used by the Roland TD-8, TD-10, and TD-20 modules to shape their
sounds. Some people love it; some people tolerate it; and some people
hate it.
