Off the top of my head, my guess is that your "Y" adaptor is actually 
stereo at each end. What you need is a true TRS splitter, which 
breaks down as you wrote above. Check to make sure that you have one. 
If the adaptor is correct, the pads should split into 9 and 10 
naturally when you strike them and carry their own parameters. 
Otherwise, you access only one input.
