Good morning, Gilligan. If the pad registers gain while it is mute,
the problem would have to be at the output stage. Personally, I'm not
aware of that ever happening. If, however, the pad is registering
gain only when the pad is actually firing--even sporadically and
elliptically--any number of things could be causing the dropouts.
Physically, something could be loose or damaged on the board, or the
foam behind the pad could have recessed too much (which shouldn't
happen yet). As for settings, self-rejection could be too high, or
rejection from other pads--which is unlikely, since the kick is
isolated naturally from the other triggers and so not liable to have
needed any such interference from you in the first place.

The first thing to do, for the sake of completeness, is try another
cable. Then try a different pad through input 1 to eliminate the
electronics. Then exhaust the trigger-settings possibilities (pad
type, gain, min. vel., rejection). If these don't get you anywhere,
the kick is probably at fault. Rather than try to fix something new,
you should be able to get another one, either through your dealer or
Yamaha directly. Could you check back when you've gone through the
round of troubleshooting?
