Re: [DTXpress] how many pads max. ???

2001-01-18 by pdk

Scott,

Like i said in another post, i gave up using the PCY80s for a ride and use a
TP80s for that, which feels a lot more natural, plus this gave me two PCY80s
crashes, which they're good at.

I too naturally took to hitting the far rim for rimshots on my TP80s snare,
though my snare is far enough back that I don't need to worry about
contacting the toms. However, I have this questionable credo that my
electrokit should attempt to mirror my old acoustic setup as much as
possible -- to make it easy to switch back and forth. That includes
positioning the hi-hat peddle under the hat pad (relatively) etc. even
though when you think about it, there's no reason to even play cross-handed,
since the hat pad could be anywhere.

Anyway, I raised the snare about an inch and forced myself to hit the near
edge by my left knee since that's how I used to do it on my Westburys. I
think it was a good call.

I have 10 pads connected: The 8 OEM singles, plus a TP80S for the snare & a
PCY80S for an extra cymbal.
I run a single pad & cymbal into 9/10 thru a y-connector. I have obtained
100% of my kit thru Ebay (rockbottommusic.com) or Yahoo Auctions.

I'm not too happy with the PCY80S, tho. I was looking for a ride/bell ride
from it, but the rim needs to be hit pretty hard & I have trouble with
16th's on it. I wasn't really interested in the choke. The TP80S rim also
has to be hit hard, but it's not so bad at the right angle & I'm not trying
for speed. For sidestick I dial down the volume.

I do like the versatility of the extra pads - I assign the 4th tom pad to
cowbell or floor tom, for 4 kits total (rim/ss, tom/cb).

Has anyone seen the same problems with the rim-switch pads? Also, how are
other folks arranging the snare pad to allow rim hits? I am hitting the far
rim, with the stick going between the 1 & 2 toms.
