Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

I'm a new member to the group.  I have a new (3/4 year old) 
DTXpressII system.  I've added a couple PinTech 6" Nimrods for 
cowbell and cymbal bell.  

I'm experiencing some difficulties with my KP65.  The front rubber 
part is wearing through.  I called Yamaha.  They told me that I could 
replace it with p/n V8587900, but it would take like 2 months to get.

Is there a quicker fix?  The pad doesn't sound the same, and I've 
relocated the pedal arm to a lower location.

I've looked through the picture files.  It doesn't look that hard to 
take apart.  I'm an electronics developer, so that's also not an 
issue.
