Yeah, quite a few people are using cymbal stacks and a few use 
woofers (the skinny thing) now. An extreme example of both would be 
Terry Bozzio (check out the videos and the kit layout section on his 
site, www.terrybozzio.com, for the amazing "orchestral" kit he 
uses). Dave Weckl and Mike Portnoy both use cymbal stacks.

I love 'em. One day I intend to see if I can come up with a 
reasonable facsimile of a two-deep stack, using stereo cymbals 
with "rim to pad" set to "on" and different crashes on rim and bow. 
And we can simulate the "woofer" with a layered kick sound too.
