There may be, but nothing is coming to mind.  When I go to setup a new kit I
always start from scratch. I go in and set the volume for everything at 70.
(OK , I know go ahead say it " Are you nuts??"  Heres my logic:

It comes from the factory with most volumes set up in the high range. So if
all the pads are set at say in the range of 100 and the maximum volume is
127, then the maximum sound level difference that can be achieved between
pads is only 27 percent (one pad at 100 the other at 127). On the other hand
if you set all the pad volumes at 70 for the base level, you can achieve an
81 PERCENT increase in sound level on specific pads (hihat, bellpad) over
the other pads. In fact my snare,bass are at 75, other toms at 70, some
cymbals at 70, 80 or 90, hihat at 90-110, cymbal bells at 100-120. This
gives me killer cymbal bell sounds and a nice loud tight hihat sound that
stands out above everything. I then let the mixer headphone amp do want it's
good at doing when listening through the headphones and let the KC500 amp
take care of the volume levels when playing normally. By sending lower
volume levels through the module and into the mixer and lower volumes out
the mixer to the amp, it gives me a cleaner sound. 

Of course if you are bring cd/MP3 music through the aux-in and are just
using the internal headphone amp in the module, you may not get the volume
that is need for the loud heavy metal stuff. Before I got my Mackie mixer, I
was using a $30 preamp (Radio Shack hold over from when I needed it for use
with a turntable) out of the modules for both headphone use and amplifier
use to boost the volume. 

I know what you mean about ghost and spirits getting into the module. I have
had one module just stop sending sound out and I would sit down and go
through two modules sitting side by side and have every setting match and
get sound out from one but not from the other. The game port/midi cable and
the dtxchange programs is the only way to recover and upload the kit back
into the module (without having to re-enter the settings manually).

The cable I used originally came with a cheap cd music writing/recording
program that is available for about $30 at a discount club

Kit) that I had gotten for use with a midi keyboard. Found at it work great
with the DtxpressII. I now use the midiman usb-midi 4x4 box.
