Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

First off, I'm assuming by newbie, you mean new at drumming.  Coming 
from my own point of view...and everyones will be different, you 
should start with one pedal and begin to master the basics first.  
Once you get comfortable with being able to get good speed and 
technique with one pedal, consider moving on to a second pedal.  no 
sense making the learning process any harder than it has to be.  Good
