RE: [DTXpress] Bass Amp, Bass Speakers: What do you think?

2004-12-10 by Ken Bracey

I'm using a Yorkville 50B bass amp (50 watts, 10 inch speaker) for my
monitor. Although this amp is really not powerful enough for the Yamaha
DTXpress III sp kit, I'll have to make do on my limited budget. This amp is
good enough however for what I need and it's nice to play without headphones
and to get the feel at the drums from the amp. The bass amp is loud enough
to make the windows rattle if I want to but at that volume it sounds like
crap and forget about getting any good sound from your cymbals... the bass
amp isn't good enough to produce the frequencies required for the cymbals.
Besides, the cymbal sounds from the DTXpress kit pretty well suck anyway
(just my opinion!). My kick predal sounds great however and I can get decent
snare and tom sounds from the amp...gound enough to practice with anyway. If
I had a choice, I'd look for a good keyboard amp next time around.

I don't have an ekit yet but hope to get one soon.

I have a Peavey 250 watt bass amp and two bass speaker cabinets, a
Hartke 410 (4 10" speakers) and a Gallien Krugger 15". I was
thinking the Peavey amp with the 410 might work pretty good as a
drum monitor setup, at least for the drums although it might not
reproduce the cymbal frequencies optimally. Anyone ever try a setup
like that?

I'll just be using this for home practice.
