frac'd SIDStation

frac'd SIDStation

2006-07-25 by data2action

Stumbled across this <http://home.earthlink.net/~erinys/fracsid.htm>
little DIY project, a SIDStation built into a 3space fracrack module:

"...not only have I built a SID module, but I can upload things like a
program that speaks with ASidXP, so that I can play the 1000's of SID
tunes available on the web. Or even better, I can upload the Midibox CV
code to it and use it as a fairly sophisticated MIDI to CV converter.
And, if I had a more recent, decent OS on my PC, I could modify it to do
things like quantize the inputs, and mix CV's/LFO's. In the hands of a
competent, motived programmer (not me by any stretch), this module could
rival the PSIM-1 <http://www.synthmodules.com/psim-1.htm> ."

hmm hmm hmmm...

It's frac'd Midibox SID, not to be confused in anyway to SIDStation.

For more information go to http://www.ucapps.de and for (mostly)
analog I/O processing there are:

http://www.ucapps.de/mios/analog_toolbox_v1_1c.zip
http://www.ucapps.de/mios/shx8_tool_v1_0.zip

at the http://www.ucapps.de/mios_download.html section.

And if anyone handy with Eagle CAD would like to help this project
he'd check http://www.ucapps.de/mbhp_shx8.html page and design a "more
clumsy" version with standard shift register/multiplexers/sample&hold
caps/opamp buffers, than the current design using obsolete NJU7304 S&H
chips.

Mee lazy. Yes. Doable, Yes. Easy, Yes. Current manufacturing process
at SmashTV's Midibox Shop uses Double Sided, plated thru holes.

SID madness

2006-07-25 by drmabuce

this is posted more to entertain than inform...

but
at this address:

http://www.musicsynthesizer.com/DIY/Mike/DrMabuse.htm

third picture down...

you will see a box i built in the early nineties to interface the user
port and the SID chips of a C64 to my analogs. This was done (as are
most of my goofy-ass contraptions) to render a composition i was
working-on at the time. (named: 'Mulberry House' for the erstwhile
location of the Electronic Music Studio at one of my alma maters)

The piece was eminently forgetable but software for the interface
still exists....... ON DATA CASSETTE! (you can see the corner of it
poking into the pic at the upper right)
It turned out that the data casette proved to be a more durable and
robust medium (after 20 years) than the the 1541 5-1/4 floppy dive.
Especially when this rig had to be transported to the hall for
performances!
I used the C64 user port and the SID chip as CV outs (and a couple
of Gate IN's on the user port) BASIC was plenty fast (and maintainable
on the fly) for most of this app. on the user port but.... when i
needed something faster i used the SID chip as a CV source.

just thought this might send a shiver of nostalgia down the spines
of some of you old-schoolers!
... but if anybody really wants a copy of that data-cassette send me
an S.A.S.E. for a 4oz. package and i'll copy one for ya.
