New Panel design

New Panel design

2006-04-24 by djbrow54

I decided to create a 'Deluxe' do-everything panel with no regard for
cost. I squished the knobs to get them on a straight line and changed
all the graphics to 0.2mm. Then I filled in all the black space!

In the files section ... DJB-CVS Deluxe (4-23-06).fpd

I still don't like my expansion connector. I'm looking for something
with 4 pins that's panel mount. I plan on extending my I2C bus
externally for development plus my SpeakJet bridge processor can also
function as a second MIDI output. Any suggestions? I don't like the
small PS2-style connectors. USB is the perfect size.

What about Ethernet-style connectors? RJ45, I think. I know it can be
dangerous to use standard connectors for new functions, but you can
easily get any length of that cable, panel-mounted jacks are
available, it's compact, it's cheap...

That's very nice! But, *sigh*, 196 bucks...

use HPGL for the dials and you'll save a bunch. I've reduced a 2u panel
by $40 doing this. they'll charge per hpgl item instead of per tick mark.

Ryan,

Do you have the HPGL files to share? Pretty please? :)

Look here for some nice dials:

Also check for nice tricks for converting Corel files to HPGL at the
bottojm of the page.

Re: New Panel design

I second that. Would appreciate any help you can provide to lower the
cost.

The two fancy logos cost $13.96. Certainly over the top but fun to do.
0 & 10 numbers on 16 controls cost $9.03
Reducing half the tick marks (every other one) saves $37.91

This drops the panel to $135.86

Removing all tick marks (the other half) drops it to $91.19. Not very
desirable, though, in my opinion.

Re: [ComputerVoltageSources] Re: New Panel design

the hpgl dials I used this time were taken from Marc Bareille's site:
http://m.bareille.free.fr/synth.htm
look through his modular panels and you'll find some of each type
(0..10, -5..+5) to extract. you can just copy them into your own panel.
However, there is one thing I don't like about these. The numbers at the
ends (0 and 10) are so low that they may overlap on a jack label on some
panels. I have not yet had a chance to make better dials, but someone on
the syth-diy list pointed me to this program for hpgl dials:
http://stiftsbogtrykkeriet.dk/~mcs/Scale.html

Another thing i did to save money: I removed engraving infill on the
dials, but left it on the rest of the panel. They went ahead and did the
infill without charge. This saved a little more, but maybe is not worth
risking that they dont' fill those engravings.

I uploaded an example of the panel I did, $42.

HPGL is an open ASCII text file like Gerber.

AFAIK, it has coordinates and only two commands, Pen Up (PU) and Pen Down (PD).

In a pinch you can edit by hand.

Re: New Panel design

Thanks for the HPGL tip.

I used the scal-o-matic to create the tic marks. I chose to not add
numbers since there isn't room. I left the 0 and 10 as engravings.
It dropped the cost from $195 to $117 (including deleting the fancy
logos). Not bad. The lines are 0.2 mm. I can make them thicker but
I think these look OK.

I uploaded it as an HPGL version.
