That recessed connector would be a pain.  I avoided DIN or D-Subs to keep other cables and plugs from accidentally being connected since there is power on that connector.  I thought about using a 4 pin DIN like the Mouser 16HR654 connector.  That size would be a little tight but would still fit in the layout.

The mini-Din isn't bad, there just isn't much retention force so you can accidentally knock the plug out of the connector.  And ... they are very tiny to solder.
