The joys of a brand new VZ-10m

The joys of a brand new VZ-10m

2008-07-29 by zoinky420

Hello all, I just joined this group to get the VZ programming pdf in
the files section, but I just thought I'd share my VZ joy with you
all. I just bought one, brand new unopened in the box for $100. Now,
I've been using midi gear for over 15 years, and aside from my first
two synthesizers, purchased with an insurance settlement, I've been
relegated to picking up whatever I can find very cheaply on the used
market. So my rig is not pretty, much of the equipment is beat up or
had to be repaired before I could use it. So what a joy it was to open
up a brand new VZ, with all the little accessories that most people
have probably lost by now. The pouch for the ROM card, and the plastic
cheat-sheet cards, for example. And did you know the VZ-10m originally
came with a free MIDI cable, a 1/4" to RCA cable and the chunkiest 1/4"
to RCA adaptor I've ever seen? OH well, I had considered keeping it
sealed in the box as a 'collectors item' since it survived so long
there already, but I wanted to use it and unpacking it was so much fun!

Anyway, does anyone know for sure whether the XLR output is balanced?
I suspect it isn't but I've been using it anyway since my 1/4" cables
are in shorter supply than my XLR cables...

I think it's not balanced, but anyway you'd probably want to use the 1/4" outputs as there are two of them- for stereo patches or multi-mode this is very useful.

Congrats on your NEW VZ. (I have the VZ-8M.) You may want to check
out the files section here and in the companion/overflow group for
VZ files. Several users have posted some patches. As I recall, one
user (Clifford, I think) posted two banks of original patches that
really push the VZ synth engine. Others have posted some excellent,
original patches as well. Even if you will be creating your own
sounds, you may find them inspiring.

Hey thanks I didn't know there was another 'overflow' group to this
one. I definitely plan on collecting all the patches I can find, and
I hope that I can get my head around programming some patches
myself. I also hope I can program up a template for the Peavey PC-
1600x fader box to access some of the VZ's parameters more easily,
but I just got the PC-1600x and haven't got very proficient with it
yet. I was hoping I'd find a VZ template to download for it
somewhere but so far I haven't found one. I did read somewhere that
the VZ transmits all its patch data at once rather than having the
ability to edit individual parameters remotely, so that might hinder
the usability of an external fader box for editing the VZ but I guess
I won't find out until I roll up my sleeves and give it a try.

Yeah I don't think it's balanced either, but I was under the impression
the outputs are '1' and '2' like with the TX81Z, rather than 'left'
and 'right'. So are there actual stereo patches?

RE: [CZsynth] Re: The joys of a brand new VZ-10m

There aren't stereo patches, but there are stereo combinations of layered patches, with one (or 2) sound(s) assigned to each output. These can be detuned copies of the same patch, giving a nice stereo effect.

In multi-mode the first 4 channels (8 voices) are assigned to output 1, and the rest to output 2.

I'm not familiar with the TX81z so I don't know how it compares to that.
