New to the group and first questions.

2004-02-04 by Jonathan Cooper

Hi....

....New here, I've just come over from the code404 A6 user group. I'm
relatively new to the Andromeda i.e. I've owned mine now for about a
year now and am really beginning to explore its depths. Other synths /
keyboards and analoguie stuff I own are:

Novation supernova
Roland JP8080
Roland SH101
Roland Fantom
Elka Synthex
Roland TR808
MPC music percussion computer (not the Roland sequencer / sampler)

2 questions, first off does any one know of a resource for downloadable
patches other than code404 and the Alesis website?

Secondly I'm after an analogue synth capable of "glassy transparent
sounds", the Andromeda is almost capable of these but doesn't quite
pull it off for me, there seems to be a grainy nature to its sound even
though at times very subtle, any sugestions would be greatly
appreciated I have to say I'm not a software person though I'm not
software phobic either I just prefer to play with hardware and enjoy
collecting.

I have to be honest I tend to be a bit sporadic on forums so please
don't think I'm being rude if you find i don't respond instantly to any
replies but I endevour to log on as often as possible.

Much appreciated.

Jonathan,

I envy your synthex (I think...). Is it reliable?

It sounds like you are after 6 pole filters. The a6 has 2 and 4 pole filters, which are why buzziness seems to prevail. Notice that filter 1 is particulary non-transparent on its own, right? A 2 pole filter has such a gradual rollof that “buzzy” hi-freq sounds escape through no matter what. And, a 4-pole is less buzzy, but not exactly super-silky, either.

BUT, the a6 CAN simulate 6 pole, by passing filter 1’s output through filter 2... You need to tweak carefully, of course. If you find a patch called “cottonfields” (you could download it from Alesis for a long time; not sure whether it’s still there, but they are out there somewhere), you will see the glassiness of the a6.

Plus, if you turn down the pre-filter oscillator levels (to 15 and below, yes), filter 1 will distort much less... It’s very easy to overload that filter, and therefore very easy to make it very uncustomary sounding You can make up for the loss in volume at the final mix knob on the far right.

Enjoy.
Jason

Jason,

Thanks for the advice, I must admit that although I have been programming
synths for a few years now I still need all the help I can get as theres always
room for improvement, simple explainations such as the one you have just
given me are the key to understanding the big picture.

By the way the synthex is my favourite synth in my collection, so simple to
programme plus built in midi, analogue chorus effect, a wicked little
modulation joystick, secuencer and 49 presets plus 49 non volatile user
memory positions, this beauty's polyphonic its got two oscilators and allows
you to mix two parts upper and lower to construct a patch, this all may seem
quite basic when mentioned in the same breath as the Andromeda but man
the pads this thing can create are truley lush.

Much Appreciated.
Jon.
