RE: [Andromeda_A6] Andromeda realy worth to get???

2003-01-16 by Paulo Abreu

Yes, there is really a BIG difference bettween the Q and A6... THe
filters (above all IMHO) make all the difference!!!!

Especially if you are talking about analog tones, despite the fact
that the A6 can be made to sound digital, with a very cutting edge
sound.

If your option is a mono synth, than it means you are mostly
interested in leads and bass...just for that specific goal, I would
not spend all that money on an A6, I would buy one pulse and one ATC
and still would have money for other stuff, and would keep the Q.

As for the Q, I would also recommend you to spend some quality time
with the A6 to see if you like the basic tone (that can always be
made to change), because one of my main criticisms of the Q are its
OSCs that are a bit to bright, and in that regard the ones in the A6
are of the same type, despite better as these are real VCOs and that
is clearly noticeable...and on the A6 you get real analog filters to
atenuate that brightness factor, while on the Q...that is probably
why on the Q the sonorities I prefer are the brighter tones and HPF
and BPF sounds, as also the comb and the "wavetable" sounds of its
ALT waves...I always asked for some sort of pre-filter parametric EQ
on the Q...just to attenuate...or to make smoother/duller/holower
sounds...think old Roland like...but I have long quited to ask about
it as Waldorf always seemed much more focused in getting advantage of
the edgier caracter of the Q...it seems that "trance"and some "IDM"
people prefer it that way... not me... except for percussive, fast
sounds.
Other area I don't like on the Q its the Envelopes..to rigid, and IMO
without the best response curves...I know one can change that by
using the modulation matrix (one of the most ridiculous
implementations in terms of UI I ever seen...compare that with the
MWxt and there is a big difference...yes they should at least have
made the screen bigger) modulating the stage of the ENVs with the
EnVs them selfes but its to much of a pain...if you get to use the A6
envelopes than you will see whats a real flexible and good
implementation of Envelopes...despite the fact that the Q has a
faster/quicker rsponse time...in that regard it is very good.

So, you see, there are these and a lot more things in favor and
against the Q when compared with the A6...and don't forget that for
pads on the Q you have this fantastic HMT intonation thing that is
indeed amazing...I think that to get that you can only find it on the
old MW1 and on the Wave...and it really can be put to use in some
wonderful ways. Ahh...and don't forget the FX on the Q, especially
the reverd that I think is very well implemented...much better than
on the A6, actually one of the better for synths if you forget the
almighty Kurweil K2600/2500 with KDFX...
