switch the touchstrip for a joystick?

switch the touchstrip for a joystick?

2006-01-06 by daxe

Hi All,

I know it's not as easy as just "switching" it since a joystick is an
analog device and the touchstrip is probably a digital one, but does
anyone know anything about this or has anyone heard of someone trying?
ANyone have a schematic for the An1X? :o)

I use my AN1X as my MIDI controller and a recently got a Wavestation
SR (rack unit with no joystick). Since a Wavestation is defined in
large part by its joystick, I would like to be able to do this from
the AN1X. I can set the touchstrip to control the same two CC#s (16
and 17) but the pressure axis of the touchstrip is too..well...touchy!

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks,

I would think it more cost effective to score a 2nd hand Korg Kaoss
Pad, or similar controller, on eBay. I picked up a microKONTROL
many months ago to use a desktop controller - just received the
Korg Legacy Collection Digital Edition as a Christmas present :-)
Hoep to have time to install it this coming weekend...

Haven't heard of anybody moding the AN1x in this way and haven't
found a schematic or Service Manual on the web.

Hello,

Rather then killing the touchstrip if i had to do it ..

- i would get a doepfer midi pocket control on ebay ..
  or a http://www.doepfer.de/pe.htm http://www.doepfer.de/pdf/PE_Man.pdf

- i would find a joystick case that can guest the dopefer pots
(or get equivalent pots and ohmmic values in different mech shapes)
the manual says that any LINEAR potmeter from 4700 to 100K ohm will do
or get a pro joystick that already has the right ohmmic pots values
  built in .. for example
  http://uk.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standard/42256192.jpg
  2 by 10K in there

- make some holes on the right part of the an1x
and install the dopefer inside the an1x u can easily find 7/12 volt 100ma
  inside the an1x power supply
in fact there is space also below the 2 mod wheels .. u can keep
the joystick there and the other 14 knobs on the top right panel ..
even better ... it is digital domain so u can just use plain simple
flat cables inside to connect the pots/JSticks

- plug AN1X midi out to dopefer midi in and get the dopefer midi out
to control anything u wish , it will also merge an1x midi cc too !

voila' ;-)

i had this in my mind since years ... if i can find the time to ..
just DOIT ! damm time !!!

Regards

This really sound like a great idea Andrea... But time...
Another word on the kaosspad, as far as I understand it you'll need to buy the kaosspad II. The first has no MIDI, right?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's correct - I've always wanted one ;-)

Anrdrea's idea is pretty darn interesting though...

Seing an ad for the KaossPadII I just had to think of one advantage of those pads against joysticks: dicontinous changes. On the KORG Prophecy I played once on the German fair you can tap on the pad (with more than one finger) allowing to change parameter values discontinously. With a joystick one can only record continous changes, and then cut recorded CC to achieve this effect.
