AN1-x vs. PLG150-AN

AN1-x vs. PLG150-AN

2004-11-05 by Lothar Mueller

I'm currently considering to swap my AN1-x with a PLG150-AN to be
plugged into a Motif7. I know, less knobs and no ribbon ctrl on the
Motif, but apart from controllers: any recommendations? Are they
internally the same? Can I use my AN1-x patches with the plugin? Any
limitations?

Thanks for any hint,

I have a PLG150AN (and DX) plugged into my S80. AN board is
basically half an AN1X; only 1 scene, 5 note poly. You can morph
between patches in user bank (128) and preset board voices (256).
AN1X patches transfer just fine, except AN board is fixed at scene 1.
AN board has a few differences. Osc1 has a multisaw wave that can be
detuned from itself and a mix wave. Tri wave on osc2 (don't know if
these are on AX1X). Osc2 has a cross modulation function that can
sound bizarre. PLG FX are limited to 3band EQ and amp sim, but you
can use FX from your motif to compensate. Can't do layers and splits
with just 1 AN board (but you could plug 2 of them into your Motif,
or do layers/splits with Motif voices). I find the PLG editor easier
to use than AN editor. A nice little board for $240. IMO the best of
the PLG series. BTW, pass on the DX board unless you really like DX-7
presets and weird metallic spitting
noises :)

AN1-x vs. AN200

2004-11-06 by John Williams

Hi,

I got an AN200 a few months back and more recently an AN1x. I haven't had a
lot of time to play with either (haven't figured out how to transfer sounds
between the two), but to my ears the AN200 sounds cleaner. Since the AN1x
is more useful to me with its keyboard and controller functions, I'm
thinking I don't need the AN200. However as I plan to use AN sounds on some
recordings I am working on, perhaps I'm better off keeping the AN200 after
all if it has better sonic quality. Any thoughts?

I'm perfectly happy with the sound quality of my AN1x through my 01V
mixer. The question is, are you happy enough with it, and does it really
matter with a virtual analogue synthesiser? Will your music drastically
improve with an AN200 instead of an AN1x?

It can come down to a couple of points i suppose, i have An200 due
to space restrictions.

Excellent in the portable sense too. Sound is great for what it
does & is. Not many listeners would be able to tell the difference.

Else if space isnt an issue & you like the keyboard feature then
An1x is just fine. Both is a nice luxury.

Final sound quality is down to many issues also. Am running An200
through 01v and is sweet. Lots of bottom end but who's complaining.

So many choices . . . yeehaa!

If the AN200 has better sound quality ditch it and use the AN1X.
Either that or run the AN200 through a bunch of stomp boxes to
degrade the sound quality.

It's a shame you can't put a DX card into the AN1X. I'd love to acces
all those metalic spitting sounds.

If you really want to mangle the sound, run it thru a Metasonix
product. They make all-vacuum-tube synth modules (no kidding!)
http://www.metasonix.com/

Thanks for your detailed answer. Sounds like I better give it (at
least) a second thought.

Greets,
