The AN1x Control Synthesizer FAQ is now online

The AN1x Control Synthesizer FAQ is now online

2004-07-18 by Jon

A working copy of the new AN1x Control Synthesizer FAQ is now online:

http://www.geocities.com/jondl_2000/an1x_faq/an1x_faq_toc.htm

The AN1x FAQ is a work in progress - new questions and answers may be
added so long as user's are willing to share their knowledge and
experience. If you would like to contribute or suggest improvements
to the AN1x FAQ, please send an email with your comments to AN1x-
list: AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com

Yeah, Jon --- YOU ROCK!

Just what the doctor ordered. Now, we have two Webspeak replies to offend
newbies with:
RTFM >and< RTFF.

*just kidding*

Just a musician's thing now as anecdotal:
Yesterday when I got to our studio I was nothing but so pissed I couldn't talk
right. See, we'd had a gig 3 weeks ago, and the studio is in the loft of a
garage, and I'm recovering from a broken leg, and a lot of gear was still in the
band bus. But, after surrendering to the heat of a loft studio (built last
winter, no air conditioning yet) and plugging along, we got the stuff set up.
Last week I and a bandmate attended the NEARFest and absorbed the music of 10
musicians and bands - many who are the cream of Prog Rock at the moment (Planet
X, Mike Keneally Band, Pallas, Universe Zero... see http://www.nearfest.com ).
Moral of the story - it's worth the hassle, folks. Whatever nuisance there is
in being a rock musician with all the stupid cables, stands, mixers, monitors,
mains, and morons... it's great to play. And it's great to play good gear. I
heard Planet X using Nord stuff, and it sounded great as VA gear. But when I've
played the Nord gear in the music store, I'm never so overwhelmed that I wanna
ditch my AN1x. At this time I only want one VA (or real analog) in my setup,
and the AN does a fine job. I heard 3 different bands using Moog Voyagers -
yep, sounds like a Moog all right. But then, in a big hall with a lot of other
instruments playing if you had blindfolded me I would never have known which
synth was whooping out that square wave or buzzing out that saw. (Blasphemy!
He's saying there isn't a lot of difference between some synths! Force him into
the small room and subject him to hours of loops from a Casio as punishment.)

Bwah haha ha - you're onto me ;-) LOL That was my ulterior motive the
whole time.

Couple of things I might do next:

1) I might try and track down mangey, the actual AN1x-list owner, and
see if I can get ownership of this list transfered. He hasn't
participated in years - since he bought a NL2 I believe. Guess I
shouldn't have sent him those mp3's I made of a NL2 I had on loan...
anyway, it would be preferable to move the FAQ from my non-
existent 'site at Geocities to the one affiliated with this list. As
an alternative, we could always set-up a bogus AN1x-FAQ-list just to
use the Geocities resources instead of mine :-/

2) I'd like to revise the message that is delivered to new
subscribers to better highlight the FAQ.

3) I'd like to solicit the list owners of some related user groups
for input regarding the PLG150-AN and AN200 - probably the CS6x and
SW1000XG lists, maybe the DX200 list too.

4) Clea-up the .zip archive of the FAQ - there are some bogus, MacOS
X files in there which are completely unecessary for Win users.

And someday I might even boot back into MacOS 9 so I can check out
the latest Voices that have been uploaded.

Well, since you asked...

1. You're missing licensing information, not even a copyright. How may
someone legally redistribute your work? Can someone legally modify it
or create a derivative work: translations, reformatting, fixing typos,
etc.?

I suggest a free documentation license like the GNU Free Documentation
License (without invariant sections) or a Creative Commons license
(without a non-commercial restriction):
* http://www.fsf.org/licenses/licenses.html#FDL
* http://creativecommons.org/license/

If you choose one of those suggested licenses, I'll convert the FAQ to
DocBook/XML. It can then be rendered to ASCII, HTML, and PDF.

2. The "other points of reference" part of the preface is confusing,
IMHO. It looks like those external links are part of the FAQ. I'd move
them to an appendix or their own section.

3. How about categorizing the questions? I think this will become more
important as the FAQ grows. How about these categories: meta-info
(about the FAQ itself and AN1x-list), MIDI, hardware (sub-sections:
AN1X, AN200, PLG150-AN), and software (sub-sections: AN1xEdit-Mac,
AN1XEdit-Windows, Other)?

4. Your font-size (-1) makes the text very small in my browser. Why
not just use the default font size?

It's also unusual that you didn't give yourself credit... no by-line.

Agreed! The domain "an1xfaq.com" is available... hint, hint!

If it were available under a free documentation license, I'd mirror it
at my own site. Perhaps other sites would be interested also:
machines.hyperreal.org, colleges (that use an AN1x), ibiblio.org, etc.

Yes, indeed I did - thanks for taking the time.

Thanks for the links - I really didn't licensing much thought
beforehand. I've considered converting the doc to other formats but
wasn't much bothered by it on this draft.

Okay, I see your point and yes, it is kind of awkward isn't it?

I'd considered this when finishing the HTML and opted to include
categories for the next revision. Keep in mind this FAQ applies to a
7 year old instrument and it's siblings - it's not going to grow
much. I've initiated correspondence with a number of related mailing
lists and I'm hopeful to gather some additional info - PLG150-AN &
AN200 specific - which will find it's way into the FAQ.

I've only tested in four browsers and this had not been in a problem,
but I'm familiar with the symptom you describe.

line.

Well, I DID credit the AN1x-list ;-)

Nice idea, but it's not going to happen. I'm not willing to assume
the responsibility of covering the costs associated with registering
and maintaining a domain name and hosting service. Been there, done
that.

What I will do it move the FAQ to a free hosting service,
specifically:

http://www.geocities.com/an1xfaq

All good idea's.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
