you might also want to think about getting the AN200, unless you really have
a need for the keyboard version. it's got some stuff the AN1x doesn't have,
plus it takes up very little room, has the onboard sequencer, etc.

i don't know, i think i paid 140$ or something for mine, and it's one of the
few hardware synths i _didn't_ sell (and i got rid of some _serious
heavyweights: prophet 600, pro-one, nord rack2, etc). it completely rules!!
but, you've got to have the software to control it (which means keeping a
machine on OS9, at least on the mac side).

don't know what eBay has to offer at the moment, but it's something to think
about. i know this list tends to focus on the AN1x but the AN200 is still
pretty kick ass.

I'm pretty sure the an200 is a plg150an card with a few extra
goodies. I've heard of people buying the an200 and pulling the
plg150an card out of it to use in another synth (to save money). I
can't believe the an200 sells for less than the plg150an!

Which seems to work agains the concept of a 'hand on' groove box
implementation ;-) By 'control' I assume you mean program.

A friend of mine commented regularly on the frustration of key
features omitted from the fron panel - specifically, pitch controls
for VCO1 & 2.

PLG150-AN and AN200 users have always been welcome on AN1x-list.

Yup, the AN200 might be a good option for me! Let's see if I understood
how the software issue works: The initial sound shaping can be done only
through computer software? And the knobs are only for tweaking presets
when playing live?
What else does the AN200 lack in comparison to the AN1x? So far we've
got no pitch controls for VCOs on the front panel and half the polyphony.

Thanks again

The morphing between two sounds is not so advanced on the AN200. If I
remember well, you can only morph between two sounds which have the same
basic settings (like waveform type, oscillator pitches, ...). On the
contrary, on the AN1X, you can morph between two completely different
sounds. And as said before, neither step sequencer nor arpegiator.

Now, if you want to use the groovebox functionnalities, it's quite
limited (but I think it's more to be considered as a synth rather than
as a groovebox). Mainly : only 3 rythm tracks, only patterns of 1
measure and smallest time division is quarter of a time.
