an150 or an1x

2003-08-27 by DMANX@talk21.com

Hi,
Is there a difrence in sound quality between the an150 & AN1X.I understand the physical difrence interms of AN1x being a keyboard, realtime control knobs, dual scene, morphing + effects, but what about the sound it creates when compared to the AN150PLG?

Regards

That totally depends on the host platform the PLG-150AN would be in,
because it transfers its signals digitally to the host.

The AN1x sounds pretty clean to my ears (via an 01V mixer and AKG K240M
headphones), so I think you'll be hard pressed to get a significant
improvement in sound quality by going all digital, unless you have
really crap analogue equipment.

Anyway, a proper analogue modeler should hiss. :)

Hello,
I have a PLG150-AN and I use it together with alle the effects in my Motif.

PLG150-AN have one scene, AN1X have two.

Thats it.

PS It sounds fantastic...

Hi
The sound quality depends on the D-A Converters that Yamaha put on the host board for the an150 and ofcause of the AN1x.
I have AN1x,can't compare with other boards but i dont think its a day and night difference.

Some of the presets in the AN1x use both scenes togheter to achieve a
4 oscillator patch with 5 voices. And there are some good ones! So I
suppose this patches would not be possible with PLG150-AN because
there is no scenes and only 5 voices, right? Unless someone have two
boards...

Also the number of voices (5 instead of 10) fx (a lot less) is lower on the
plg. BUT it does have one extra waveform for the osc's AND it has x-mod.

Excellent points from all. To summarize:

- The PLG has a couple of synth features (e.g. cross modulation) not
found in the AN1X.

- The AN1X is bi-timbral, the AN150 is mono timbral in the synth
section.

- One other difference, the AN1X amp (the electric amp which is
connected to the volume knob, not the electronic on that is part of
the synth architecture) appears to overload and clip, providing a
natural analog distortion. This is highly correlated to the use of
the electronic amp-feedback feature, as the amp feedback reduces the
gain. But you can separate the effects by adjusting the main volume
control and observing the increase in "smokiness" as you raise the
volume on loud (high gain) patches. This feature/problem does not
seem to appear on the AN150. As a result, I believe that warm timbres
come more naturally to the AN1X, though I worry about eventual amp
problems.

Jerry
