Rainbow Jimmy's Voices

Rainbow Jimmy's Voices

2003-08-09 by Jon

Been playing with RJs Voice bank for the past few days. Couple of thing that stand
out: 1, the Tones are unique considering we're talking Saw and Square waves. 2, the
use of inverted envelopes is pretty inspired - as is the use of BEF and BPF filters as
opposed to the typical 24/18/12 LP filters. Also, some pretty interesting uses of the
PEG - I particularly like the approach of the maxed out PEG Decay setting with a a
minimal amount for Depth. I like your use of the Plate revern too (but on a few too
many patches for my tastes.)

Couple of thought: Many Voices use exagerrated values for the EG settings, i.e.,
maximum settings for Decay and Release envelopes. This makes it very difficult to
'play' the sound as opposed to 'trigger' the sound. If you simply hit the keys to play a
Voice with a max Decay setting it simply moves onto the Release stage v-e-r-y s-l-
o-w-l-y and bypasses the Sustain stage altogether. Combined with the Delay and
Reverb Return settings heavily biased towards 'wet' this results in a cacophony that
does not sit well when mixed with other sounds. If you're going to use these long
release EG times you might want to scale back on the Reverb and Delay times or vice
versa.

Many voices use multiple, non-conventional modulators in the Ctrl Matrix assigned to
the same Source. I found it difficult to control the modulations in real time with so
many Params assigned. Another approach might be to duplicate the Voice and edit
down the number of Params used per Voice. Again, my point being it's difficult to
'play' these sounds with intent.

You might want to scale back the VCA level on the UNISON voices so they more
closely match those Voices simply in Dual or Single mode.

I found some of the voices inspiring and have reworked them into new material.
Think I'll combine them into a new bank of 'Other Peoples Sounds' to upload.
