Glissando/Portamento

Glissando/Portamento

2003-01-06 by nuvalerium <alan@strokes.co.uk>

Been a Numan fan since day one so love those fantastic glissando's /
Portamento's produced by the Polymoog/ARP Soloist etc etc. The 'Vox
Humana' preset on the Polymoog along with the effects Mr Numan used
is still the best Analogue Synth sound in the world and impossible
to recreate.

Anyways, I digress (dreaming of getting my hands on THAT sound)

The AN1x does produce a good Portamento but I have found it tricky
to use effectively, especially live. Is it possible to assign the
ribbon controller to Portamento so that a slide of the finger does
the job? If so, I would appreciate a quick 'lesson' on how to do it.

Ideally, I like to use the ribbon controller as a cut off, so the
absolute ideal solution is a foot controller that can be assigned to
the Portamento. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, can
you please advise the best foot controller to buy?

Thanks in advance. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a
happy and peaceful New Year, full of love and happiness.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Portamento Time is MIDI CC#5 on the AN1x. All you have to do is change the Foot Controller setting to CC#5, and you should be OK. And the best (IMHO) foot pedal ever made is the Yamaha FC-7, which works perfectly with the AN1x!

It's funny that you mention the polymoog/Numan/Vox Humana connection as I'm programming that sound at the moment. And I'm nearly there! I've been using "Cars" and "Airlane" from "The Pleasure Principal" as reference material but if anyone knows where I can hear the sound isolated (short of actually getting my hands on a Polymoog) then please let me know.

Anyhow if you'd like the patch when I'm finished let me know.

Philip

Hi Philip

Would love to hear your finished patch. Have been trying to get
close for many months but I still cannot get it. The Pleasure
Principal is probably the best reference you will get of Numan's
effects on the polymoog. The lead line in Cars is as clear as it
gets. Its a bugger because I know for a fact that Mr Numan has at
least two Polymoogs which are not used but I am assured are still in
working order. They will however probably remain that way for some
time which is a shame. I reckon they will need a fair bit of work to
get these analogue beasts back to prime condition anyway.

Cheers

Alan
