Yes, I'm slow in replying.

Have a look here:

http://www.yamahasynth.com/down/ex57r/s_mp3.htm

I know there should be a few more, but I can't seem to find them at the
moment.

Anyway, I like the "EX files", although it touches just a small subset of
the EX5. The other one, "Zsa zsa", does have a nice modelled trumpet though.
And keep in mind that this thing can sample... not all it is from the
internal ROM.

Here's a link to one of the EX5 user sites. http://www.wbmedia.com/ex5/

Don't know how actively it is updated.

The site is not kept up to date, but the discussion groups are always active.

I've used the EX5R in almost every track I have done in the past 2 years. It's
a great sounding synth.

Wow, i listened to these files and to some of the other URL, i must
admit, it sounds fantastic. How is the work with the Sampler? Is it a
phrase sampler, like the one in the CS6x or can it compete with A3000?

This is getting a bit off-topic, so I hope you people don't mind
if I tell a bit more about the EX5.

What you should keep in mind, is that demos *always* sound fantastic.
THey probably used some hi-end effects, compression, stuff like
that. But still, it's a very capable machine, and it's going away
cheap now - if you can still find one.

The sampler consists of two parts: recording and playing. In playing,
it's part of the synthesis engine, and thus completely different
from the A3000 (but that's because the A3000 is completely different
from anything else). So all the thing you can do with built-in
waveforms, you can do with samples in RAM or Flash. However, you
don't have stuff like loop remix.

Recording is pretty straightforward: you can record, cut and paste,
normalise, create multi-samples, do keymapping, and that's about
it. You can also load samples from floppy or (optional) SCSI, and
here is where the trouble begins: it is *slow*. Not just slow, but
*very* slow. Think about 30 minutes to load 64 Mb of data.

So if you plan to do a lot of sample-loading and loop-oriented
work, look elsewhere. If you want a synth that offers double the
polyphony of the Triton Pro at less than half the price, with about
the same feature set (though the sequencer is not so good) and very
good sounds, maybe this is one for you. Just make sure you can get
the latest ROM version, though it depends on your territory whether
you get it for free or not.

Well it´s not completely OT, since the EX5 has AN-synthesis...;)

Yeah, i remember that...you can use samples as part of the AWM2-
engine, fascinating feature with a lot of possibilities.

Loop Remix is not so important, i remember in the Quick Guide about
the EX5 it says that it (the sample-engine) can´t timestretch and
pitch-shift, but isn´t that what you can do with ROM-waveforms?

> Not just slow, but

That´s something all Yamaha-Sampler are known for...even the brandnew
A4/5000 are slower than slow.

I´ve read a bit in the reviews on Sonicstate and on EX5tech and it
seems to me, that it´s an interesting synth with a very powerfull
synthesis-engine (combining samples with AWM and AN...yummy, i
imagine endless evolving pads), excellent for live-keyboarding,
excellent sound for the studio. But the sampler looks only usefull
for AWM, and to fly in some Samples, something i also could do with
an Audio-track in Logic. I am not sure if this would be a good add to
my current setup, but i´ll consider it. Next time i am in my music
store i will take a look at it.

Thank you so far, for the interesting information.

Um, no. Time stretch and pitch shift (which are essentially the same) change
the length of a sample without changing the pitch, and vice versa.

Yes, you are right, stupid me...;))) ...the VP9000 celebrates this
techniques towards perfection.
