Considering Buying an AN1X

Considering Buying an AN1X

2002-05-15 by blackwoodtebo

Ok I know this is a real general question, but I am considering
buying an AN1x because someone on a forum recommended them. I am a
Bassist and was looking for something with which i could do Drum n
Bass style productions. How versatile is the AN1x. I heard it gets
Great Sub Bass sounds which is good. I was also considering buying
an MS2000. Does anyone know how these 2 synths compare? Can Anyone
tell what the AN1x features are exactly, i have yet to find this
info, but i am still searching. Does it have a vocoder? and Can i
hook it up to a midi contoller like the Evolution? Thanks everybody.

The an1x is a cheap 2nd hand buy, it's quite a good synth and has numerous
features, the ones that stand out are Scene morph and the sequenced
controllers. It sounds pretty good too.

I wouldn't buy this as my only synth.

I'd check out,

Nord Lead (Good Hard Leads and Bass)
Waldorf Q, Micro Q (Lots of variety, lots of possibilities, has a colder
techno edge to it)
Access Virus (A good all rounder, capable of a lot)
Novation Nova or Supernova. (Good Generic synth, sounds very lush, this with
a Nord or Waldorf would cover your VA angle)

For drum and bass, a sampler is probably the most important bit of kit,
either soft or hard. A lot of producers user the EMU's for the Z-plane
filters, to get that rasping bass effect.

I'd forget the MS2000 for drum and bass, far too gentle. The An1x is a
better synth than an MS2000.

Cheers

Re: [AN1x] Considering Buying an AN1X

Hello blackwoodebo !
first : sorry for my english language...i'm french...
second : your questions !
I've baught a yamaha AN1x yesterday !! and i have an MS2000R (rack version) also since 6 month !
here is my opinion :
prices : MS2000 : 1000euros, MS2000R : 760euros, AN1x : 500-600 euros.
specs : take a look at www.vintagesynth.com or www.synthzone.com for a pertinent review of the capabilities, specifications and demos about this gear... and more links about more specialized sites...
For me, the An1x have good bass sound, and very amazing and beautiful FM or numeric synth type sounds but i think the MS2000 have better deep and analogic bass sounds : more fat and more "analogic" !! But it's my first impression about the AN1x...
AN1x or MS2000 are very powerful for live playing : many controlers and knobs; modulation sequencers, arpegiattor.... AN1x have the ribbon controller and not the MS2000. AN1x Arpegiattor have 30 preset and MS2000 arpegiattor : 6.....But MS2000 have a very versatile vocoder (but you can't make "coherent" vocoder voices like "Daft punk" for ex. it's only for vocoder type effects : distorded "robots" type voices ....).
The specs about the synthetis capabilities are the same : 2VCO with a lot of waveforms and synchro, tuning, ring mod, mix, 2LFO, LPF, HPF, BPF 12/24dB/oct..... + effects : more choices in the AN1x than the MS 2000 : only 4 delay types and 4 modulations types(vibrato, phaser, chorus...) + distortion (no parameters). AN1x have all the effects you need with combination... And more playing expression capabilities (assignable knobs and controllers).
If you can, try this 2 Analog modeling synth in your music shop.... and make the good choice with your ears !!

No and Yes

Why does everyone want vocoders????

The bass on the AN1x is like no other va bass. It has a very 'yamaha' sound-
remember the DX11?- i don't want to recommend it because i want that sound
all for myself!!

One thing it does do-which the only other synth i can think of does, is the
minimoog- is, the ability to feedback the output back into the filter- how
much bass do u need???- it ends up sounding like my bass cones are buckling
up!

I only tried the ms2000 once- i didn't know what all the fuss was about-
although i have heard some people do some remarkable music with it.

The bottom line is, all early jungle was done with say an Akai s950 or s1000-
a few james brown breaks and a sine tone- buy it (the AN1x) and make it work
for you.

enough said.
